I asked in the 750 thread a week ago, but I need to know if the GT750 picture quality is as good or better than the old HC1500 when in 2D? For those who know or have seen both, Thank you in advance.

Maybe no one has seen them both, especially since there is a five year difference. If no one chimes in, go to this site http://www.projectorreviews.com/optoma/gt750/index.php. They have detailed reviews of both projectors and hopefully you'll be able to extract the info you need.

I can make a pretty good educated guess, overall I think most would say the Optoma wins:

It will probably be a few tradeoffs...

The hc1500 will likely have a bit better blacks in dark scenes, the Optoma will have more POP in bright scenes.
The Optoma might be sharper. The Optoma will be far brighter + 3D.

Overall I think as long as you are not worried about black levels, the Optoma will win out for you.
If you are more worried about 2D quality, you might want to keep your eye on the used market. The Benq w710st is another alternative to the Optoma, although the 3D support isn't as seamless.
