After 1 year and 10 months of no problems with my 5020 I am now getting the two red blinking lights of death, the projector will not turn on. I called Epson support and they're sending a replacement. The blue status light is off while the temp and lamp lights blink red. I'm not sure what that exactly is but apparently it's nothing they want the consumer to handle. Keeping my fingers crossed that the replacement has no issues.

Since the projector won't start I can't exactly check the number of hours but my norm is very light usage. I tend to watch a movie with friends once a week like clockwork, then on occasion I'll watch another one that same week. I'd estimate a total of 300 hours minimum to 400 hours max. I'd be very surprised if it was higher than that.

When I bought the 5020 back in early 2013 it immediately had a problem and I quickly replaced it then. So this one itself is a replacement but it's been rock solid until now.

When I called and they verified my registration they immediately setup the replacement shipment, no questions asked, that's really good service. On the other hand it's worrying that this is the second time in just 22 months that I've needed to do this! My old InFocus Screenplay 4805 has got many more years on it and never had a problem.

Well my projector just died today. Probably about 500 hours. 2 blinking lights of death. I sure hope this isn't like my Xbox 360 all over again. For $2500 that thing should last a lot longer. I don't care how they are willing to fix or replace it if this fix is only going to last one more year and move me outside my warranty window.

I totally agree. Epson Support sent my replacement by FedEx last Friday, everything looks good so far. But this is my 2nd replacement/refurb in less then 2 years. Does anyone have info on how Epson handles this situation once a customer is beyond the original 2 year warranty? I assume they start to charge for the replacement service and I'm curious how much that might be, as I have a strong feeling this is something I'll be running into again.

Most electronics warranties cease at the end of the original warranty period even if you received a replacement unit. What you might be able to do is negotiate with the customer service folks and get them to sell you an extended warranty assuming you didn't get the extended warranty up front. I did this with my Samsung plasma: It wasn't cheap but it certainly was cheaper than a new plasma and, like you, I had no confidence that the replacement units were going to last. With so many components sourced in China nowadays, I think it is hit or miss with part quality and longevity. For this reason, I find myself buying extended warranties now when I hardly ever did (buy them) in the past.

OK I just got my referb today. Seems OK. The outside had some marks on it. I know my original unit is in mint condition, except for the part that it doesn't work. I also found it funny the one that was shipped to me had the lens cover open and no padding around the lens to keep it in place during shipping like when i received my unit new.

What is the best way to test this thing out? Any recommendations? They suggest it comes with a new bulb but who knows

Mine has what appears to be dead pixels, 2700 hours since jan 2013. Epson is sending a replacement.

Thinking about selling the new replacement projector and "downgrading" to a tv.

If anyone is looking to buy a 5020, let me know I also have a 92" black diamond zero edge 1.4 screen. Located in Los Angeles.

But speaking of replacement, does anyone have a burned out bulb/lamp I could get/buy?

I've also thought about selling this unit, losing some money and switching to the Panasonic 8000. Any thoughts on if that device has problems.
