whether you believe it or not the ebay store has a good rating for selling projector bulbs
I replaced my bulb at 1800 hours use to watch all my movies on normal mode put in the new bulb and I had forgot how bright this projector was, now watching movies on low
lamp mode. Ive had this bulb for 5 or 6 months and for 25.00 its a steal

Have you properly calibrated the new (cheaper) bulb? If you were able to properly calibrate it to industry standards, that would give some encouragement to buy the cheaper bulb. My PJ only has about 550 hours or so (518 hrs last checked on Mar 25th) so not in the market just yet for a new bulb.

If you did calibrate the new bulb, how did it compare to your original Epson bulb in case that one was also calibrated?

When I bought my PJ back in Mar 2015 from a well-respected Forum member that lives nearby (he's also a very experienced professional calibrator and online/in-print AV gear reviewer), he fully calibrated the PJ in my room and achieved all Delta E's under 3.0's, with quite a few close to 1.0. The PQ was incredible, noticeably better than the 7500UB it replaced (we did side-by-side comparisons). I have no problem paying a few extra $$ for a genuine Epson bulb if that's the only way I can ensure an accurate picture...

So I'm curious to how accurate the cheaper bulb is...and I'm always up for a great bargain if it does perform well!

still one of my favorite bumper stickers of all time...

Picked up a genuine bulb off ebay. More because I've been in a holding pattern on an upgrade.

I had not noticed any drop in my old bulb. It was at just over 1800 hrs.

The results were pretty staggering. Light controlled room, measuring lux on my phone. Moving phone around screen in same pattern, used calibration disc on 100% white pattern.

High lux reading, min lux, color mode, lamp mode:

520, 264 dynamic high

420, 258 dynamic low

240, 144 thx high

227, 98 thx low

NEW bulb

1008, 489 dynamics high

650, 303 dynamics low

415, 189 thx high

303, 146 thx low

Numbers shouldn't be compared to other projectors, as this is a non-calibrated unit, tweaked to my color/lumen preference.

Numbers are good for comparing the bulbs though.

Moral of the story - you may be more ready for a new lamp than you maybe realized.

i have a issue thats bugging me,
Ive noticed that since a while back when I turn on the projector, the picture has pronounced green tint, and after a minute or two comes to regular color.
First i thought it was the bulb, but now after replacing two bulbs the issue is still there.
It doesn't bug me that much, i just wonder if this is a sign of some mayor problem coming up?

I just got a refurb 5020 a couple months ago now... It's had green when turning on ever since day one, goes away quickly. If that makes you feel any better...

Green tint on startup is totally normally...all the 5020UBs do that.

Great news then, but honestly I dont think it was there when I first got it, but I might be wrong lol

I am thinking of getting a silver/grey screen, the projector screen I have know is tab tensioned with nlack velevet fixed frame, 106", but im not happy with overall pq.
Room isnpainted in grey, and qhen i lroject on a wall, pq is way better, blacks, contrast, everything, just a touch dimmer.

So i want to get a budget opion for hrey screen, carls? Silver ticket?
Diy not a problem for me. Budget is hehe

I believe it starts after 10 hours or something like that before it keeps count after a resetting.

I personally have an Elite Screens (link) that I've been happy with - I believe it's a 1.1 gain. This is in a light-controlled media room and the Epson runs on ECO mode and was calibrated about a year ago to ~14 ftL.

Good deal for 25.00, I would like to know if these are the bulbs that when customers send their projector in for service then Epson sends you a so-called repaired unit with a new bulb and the old bulb is the one this ebay store is selling, the 4 units I sent back had less than 10 hours on the bulb, just a thought who knows

I should of did this too, but I guess even if you had your projector calibrated after a few months of use the bulb drops in lumens then your projector isn't really calibrated to specs

So how does one do a pro-level calibration on these cheap bulbs.. never new there was adjustments for a bulb other than adjusting the projectors brightness & contrast
so how you get accurate calibration on the bulb you may shed some light.
your not one of those believers that if you don't spend 300.00 on a bulb its not a real oem Epson

You don't "adjust the bulb", you adjust the display settings (brightness, contrast, gamma, etc) for proper grayscale settings then dial in the individual colors (RGBCMY). Whether an OEM Epson bulb or otherwise, being able to get an accurate picture is what's way more important to me, not price.

Google AccuCalHD and/or SpectraCal for some good info on calibrations, both professionally and DIY. I am a believer on getting the max performance out of a display by a quality calibration, not just putting in a less-hours bulb to make things brighter...

See attached PDF for an example calibration report. I've used AccuCal a few times over the years and was very impressed with the improvements - well worth the cost. YMMV...

Hey guys,

I have an Epson 5020UB, about 3.5 years old. Never had a problem, never use it much. Only about 140 hours on it. Have not changed any equipment in 2 years. Now the picture is dropping out. I have done all the tests and process of elimination It is the Epson for sure. Changed cables, players, used TV, used blue ray different outputs, inputs etc.

Epson says they think HDMI outputs on it or main circuit board. Just wondering everyone's thoughts? Thanks much.

Brian
