I am looking for a projector that can throw around a 100" image at about 8 foot. The top 10 model recommendations from projector central seem to top out at about 85". Any recommendations on a good model that has a shorter throw distance?

Is there any flexibility in the throw or screen size? If you can go to a 9' throw, the Benq W1070 will work.

A short throw version of the w1070, the w1080st will be available in early February... Throw ratio .69-.83... Can do 100" from 5ft, or MUCH larger from 8 ft.

I wonder what he'd think about 3D IMAX?

The w1080st is perfect, except it's a bit more than I'd like to spend, and I don't need 3D. Is there a similar-throw option that's cheaper with just 2D?

According to BenQ, the W1080st is the first full HD short throw projector so you pretty much have no options if you need short throw.

I don't think you're going to save much by not going 3D with newer projectors. many DLPs have been able to do 3D for years, even before 3D started to get popular. That is why you see a lot of projectors labelled as 3D ready (of course they don't tell you that you need to get a converter box or use a pc to actually get 3D).

If you are willing to go down to 720p there is the Benq 710st and the Optoma GT750e. They both seem to get pretty good reviews.
