I am currently considering the Epson PowerLite 8350 for home theater use.

I would also like to be able to bring it to the backyard, and project live video at events around Los Angeles from time to time. I feel like being an affordable lens shift really helps it there, but am totally new to this and not sure if there's setup stuff I'm not aware of, if there are more portable (smaller) projectors of similar quality, or what would make a projector in that price range ideal for situations that are less than ideal, with ambient light or projected onto a wall rather than proper screen.

Thoughts?

(Model names would be great- the Optoma HD20 looks nice too, are there other models I should compare?)

http://www.guerilladrivein.org/ might be of some help. There have been some discussions on those setups you might want to get familiar with, not the least of is the legalities. http://www.guerilladrivein.org/2005/04/start-your-own-guerilla-drive-in.html In the home, the 8350 is fine, but out doors, depending on the ambient light, and the size of the image you will be working for, it might not be the best choice if your wanting to use it in that manner as well.

Thanks so much for responding!

Was giving up hope on getting any advice...

Do you think there is a model under 2000 that would serve both as a quality home theater system (relatively) and would be decently flexible for outdoor performance or other random quick setup uses?

All the best,

Austin

I can't recommend one for outdoor use, as the ambient light and image size will factor in. Nice "light cannons" for home use?? Last years, Epson 5010 can be had for around $2k, and is a very nice home pj, lens shift, and is very bright that might suit your needs outdoors, depending on the factors.
