I'm in a new house and have a 20' x 11'ish room with 8ft ceiling and looking for the right 1080p projector preferrably sub $1k but could up that if I have to.

Since its my first pj ive been reading a lot and just when i have one narrowed down something rules it out. Unique situation in that i want to shelf mount it at the back of the room length wise so i need a 20' throw that wont cast too large an image and obviously at my price point not much in the way of lens shift or zoom options. I think I calculated around 150" max. I'm starting out on the wall but will prob add a screen later after audio as budget allows.

I've been considering a refurb Epson 8350 for $899. 3d wasnt even on my mind at first but im starting to think i might want it after all. I know that really limits my options so if i have to stick to 2d i will.

In Canada and having trouble tracking down retailers for a couple models i like so far including Mitsubishi hc400 and the Panasonic AR100u.

Any recommendations based on my desired ideal setup?

First decide if you want 3d or not...

Okay I'll definitely throw 3d out of the equation at this point. Also a few more things to try and narrow it down for you guys:

- ambient light shouldn't be an issue, it's a basement room with a large window but I'll be shutting out the light and our usual viewing times are late evening and the room is pitch black
- as such I don't need the projector to be a torch but I'm thinking at least 2000 lumens would be nice
- if I can't find anything with lens shift in my price range, i'd probably do a ceiling mount closer to the back of the room maybe 16-19' and use zoom (I think 1.5 will be enough)

Depending on the projector it looks like a 1.5 zoom will allow me to get the screen size I want, ~130", with my ideal setup (rear wall shelf mounted about 5'-6' high). Still rules out a lot of PJ's I liked including the Benq W1070 and MW519.

In summary:

- Goal is to be under $1k approx (before taxes)
- 3d not a must but would be a nice perk
- 18'-20' throw and limited screen size to ~"130
- Preferrably DLP and 1080p

I was going to say, I just picked up the Epson 8350 but its not DLP. The PRO8200 may be a good option but will be pretty darn bright. I decided on the 8350 because it was the only 1080p projector in my price range that had a lens shift. The 8350 will throw but at 20 feet not sure how bright it will be...The Acer H9500BD may be a good choice for you but I cant really comment on the throw of it.

Thanks tshepp I'm actually looking very closely at both the Epson 8350 and the Acer H9500BD. Looks like the Epson.ca deal for 8350 refurb $899 which includes a 1 year warranty is the best deal around if I decide to go that route. I know I said I'd prefer DLP but the more I read about the 8350 considering it's my first PJ I think it would suit me just fine.

I think the 8350 would be bright enough for me since I'd likely have the room in complete darkness. The PRO8200 was on my radar too, good price at under $800 brand new with a good warranty too but it seems like a lot of people got faulty units. This has me leaning away from it for now.

If I can find a good deal on the Acer 9500BD or find out when their infamous H6510BD is going to hit shelves in Canada I might hold off on the 8350.

Have you considered newer kids on the block like BenQ W1070 or Acer H6510BD. Both are available on Amazon and both are sub $1000. W1070 being the older of the two, even has a couple of threads going on here at AVS.

As far as a good screen for your set up is concerned, you can make one your own, if DIY is your cup of tea:

http://www.amazon.com/Blackout-Fabric-DIY-Projector-Screen-66x110-Inch/dp/B007KA07YM/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1362232722&sr=1-1&keywords=diy+projector+screen

A nice home theatre for around one grand. I am waiting for a bit more info on the Acer before pulling the trigger. For me, 3D does matter even though the majority of the viewing would be 2D.

Good luck!

PS. Sorry, just noticed that you have acer shortlisted already

The 8350 would seem to me to be a foolproof choice. I'm throwing 106" from almost 15 feet and still have so much brightness to spare that I have to run it in eco-mode and with the brightness and contrast turned down, just so bright scenes don't fry my retinas. And lens shift is something I don't see how you could live without once you've had it. It just makes set-up so much easier. Just my .02

Thanks for the help guys.

Indus thank you for that link as I'm highly considering the DIY screen.

Ratpacker that's exactly what I just did this past weekend. Awaiting delivery of my Epson 8350! biggrin.gif
