I am debating between the two projector models and was hoping to get some imput. Projector will be going in a basement that will have light control, but the setup will not be a dedicated home theater. I want to be able to entertain friends and/or watch sports with having some of the lights on and still get an awesome picture. I will be using a SI Black Diamond 1.4 screen, somewhere between 100-113". The projector can be mounted as far away as 20 feet. Thanks for any input.

Any chance you could step up to the Sony HW50ES?

I dont see myself stepping up to the 50ES at this time. I saw both the 5020 and 30ES at a local magnolia store. I thought the sony had better color and contrast. But the epson handed ambient light better, but it was also on the black diamond screen. The epson was in dynamic mode, I am thinking that the color can be made far more accurate.

The Epson color can be made better but your going to lose some brightness in the process.

I dont think that will be an issue. I liked the brightness of the sony at 1300 lumens, so I dont think toning down the epson would be a huge deal in my situation.

I had a Epson 5020UB and it was replaced twice for convergence issues. the Epson looked great but I was not comfortable having to keep getting the projector replaced. Never got a good one! Took the last one back to Best Buy whare I bought it and changed to the Sony HW30aes. Waiting for the Sony to show up as they had to order one for me. I am possibly going to move the the HW50. Just don't know if the 50 is worth the extra cash.

I am not sure. When I was at the store I believe the sales guy gave me that as a option. The HW50 is a lot more money and I don't know for sure if I need the extra lumens. Higher contrast ratio would be nice. The 50 has more adjustment as well. Anybody have a 30 in the past and upgraded to the 50? I would like to know if It's worth making the switch.

They also carry the 5020, can be ordered through the website or ordered in-store.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Epson+-+PowerLite+Home+Cinema+Full+HD+3D+3LCD+Projector/6952923.p?id=1218816172909&skuId=6952923&st=epson%20projector&cp=1&lp=1

It's just listed strange on the site as it doesn't come up if you search "epson 5020".

Where is here?

i can confirm that BB does carry the 5020, tho they have a different SKU name for it, 57020. I bought mine through the local store and had it shipped there, was able to negotiate a bit off the top which was nice.
