I'm moving into a home with a home theater setup with a 100" Firehawk screen and a Yamaha LPX-510 projector. I'm not sure how many hours are in the lamp but if it dies, I don't feel like spending a few hundred on the lamp. After doing some research, the LPX-510 was top of the line when it first came out, nearly 10 years ago. The question is (and I'm pretty sure of the answer) but would even something like the Benq w1080st or the Epson 8350 out perform it?

Anyone? I know that without the distance from the screen to the PJ and the angle of the mount (ceiling mount), it's hard to tell whether a certain projector will work in that home theater room. But the answer I'm looking for is whether a modest PJ upgrade that's around $1k will blow away that particular top of the line back then projector. My feeling is yes since a lot has changed in the past 10 years, but I don't know enough about projectors. If the answer is yes, then I wouldn't mind spending that amount for the upgrade.

I'll respond. Going to a 1080p projector would be worth the upgrade. http://www.projectorcentral.com/yamaha_lpx510.htm?page=Conclusion In that conclusion, they compare this 9 yr old pj to a Sony HS20. I had the HS20 until I bought my Epson 6010 2 yrs ago. Brighter, more contrast, 3D, 1080p, quieter in eco mode, lamp life is longer. No power zoom/focus is about the only thing it doesn't do better.

That being said, your a little limited in the $1k budget range to the lower cost, and slightly less capable pj's. If you can go a little higher, Visualapex has last years Epson 5010 on sale, refurb, 2 yr warranty for $1700. In the $1k range, the Benq 1070 seems to be the best bang for the buck atm, or the Epson 8350. I would take the money, spent on a lamp, and apply it to the upgrade.

jnabq, I appreciate your feedback and your suggestions. I'd figure that anything newer would be better than the best of 10 years ago, just don't know what the min of today's tech would be of yester-years. I also not limiting myself to $1k but used those pjs as comparions to the Yamaha. I'm new to the world of projectors and just learning so much now.
