I am looking to place a projector on a tabletop at the back of a room, 12 feet from a desired 110 inch screen.

For $4k, I am hoping to get a screen and projector that does 1080p and 3D.

What might my options be?

Thanks!

Do you mean shelf mounting the projector behind you, instead of placing it on a table in front of you?

The Sharp XV-Z30000 is the best 3D projector of the year. It listed for $4999 but can be had now at Woot for $1799. I just bought one the other day and it will be delivered Monday. There is a thread for it in the over $3000 forum. If you are ready to buy this has all the options you would ever want.

You won't see it discussed in this forum as it is a $5000 projector or was till the deals started last month.
Note the Woot deal is a limited time, there was one prior to this one with 4 pairs of glasses and unfortunately I had not talked myself into buying the first time. No idea how many they have or if there will be yet more deals.. I would expect there will be as this projector came out Mar 2012 I believe.
Good luck in your choice

In case you miss it, there is a video on the woot page that goes over what you get and set up.

Lens to screen at 12'?

If so, I would personally recommend the Sony VPL-HW50ES (online about $3,300) and pair it with a Carada Criterion in Brilliant White - About $900 shipped.

Call it $4,200 for this combo. No mount, no cables, no speakers, but one of the best setups (IMO) at about that price point.

If you are firm at $4,000 then you can go with the JVC DLA-RS46 (great image for the money!) or the 30ES from Sony, or the Epson 5020 or Panasonic AE4000 all of which deliver excellent image quality for the money.

Gotta add that I'm basing this on a good theater setup with good light control overall and no additional special requirements.
