The general rule of thumb is that you should be prepared, perhaps even expect, a "counterfeit" lamp if you're going through resellers or vendors on Ali-Express/Ebay for bare lamps.

Most vendors will advertise "counterfeit" items under the branding of their genuine counterparts because they honestly believe they're within spec. They don't think it dishonest because they don't see there being any harm in selling an alternative generic that works "just as well as the original" in their mind.

Been down this road far too many times.

Hi, I would need some help with my BenQ w1070.

The time has come to change the bulb but I don't understand the difference of the "replacement bulb" and "replacement module with bulb".

What do I need to change? When do I need to change the bulb and when the module?

Can I change both the bulb and the module by myself or not?

Thank you
A.R.

The complete assembly is the module and the lamp. The bulb (lamp) sits in the module. Normally when you buy a replacement bulb you also buy the complete module unit.
This makes fitting a new bulb really easy.

On the other hand. Some folks just buy the bare bulb and try and replace the lamp in the module. That's a lot harder. Things can go wrong but it's a lot cheaper.

My w1070 bulb appears to be crapping out after 3.5k hours or so. Is this normal?

In any case, if I buy the entire replacement lamp plus housing: http://www.amazon.com/BenQ-5J-J7L05-.../dp/B00B4G8ALK

Can it be changed without un-mounting the projector from the ceiling? Does anyone have instructions for the swapping out process?

The W1070 defaults to "Normal" lamp mode so if you never changed it, then that is what you ran in. 3,500 hours is what Benq claims for "Normal", and 6,500 for "Smart-Eco".

The lamp replacement procedure begins on page 49 of the manual.

You can change the lamp-within-housing without taking it off the ceiling (I've tested this before). Refer to the link in the previous post; but essentially, there're a total of two screws: one on the side of the unit to allow you to take off the lamp cover, and then one more inside on the lamp housing itself - then you use the housing's silver handle and gently pull it out. New one goes in the same way. 15 minutes and you're done.

If you're going to buy a whole lamp assembly, I'd recommend rather just spending a bit more to get a real BenQ one, since Amazon is very hit-or-miss in terms of authenticity with this kind of purchase. Both Provantage and B&H stock proper originals.

Otherwise refer to this thread and a few posts in the W1070 one regarding bare bulbs which are generally less than $80.

Ordered a real Benq replacement and got it installed, back to normal!

Guys, thanks for the advice and directions, I wasn't looking forward to this but it went well!

Also, set the lamp to smart-ecco this time.

Good to hear. Nah, it's really simple to do

Yup, SmartEco should give you significantly more than the 3500 hours you got in Normal (with the same amount of perceived brightness).

Just remember to set that lamp mode on both your HDMI inputs (if you use more than one) since they may be using different sets of settings.

I am looking for the w1070 original bulb but that seller is not selling it anymore. Any ideas where I can get just the bulb from, I am in Canada. I am trying to find a good one on aliexpress.

How hard was it to replace the bulb? Do you have any tips?

Looks promising, for $70 I think I'll try it out. My bulb is about to hit 4000 hours (I use Eco mode) in under a year. How long do these tend to last? I thought when I hit 3k I'd have to start shopping but my bulb hasn't dimmed a bit from what I can tell.

It is pretty easy but there is one tip I would give: if some part is not moving when you are trying to remove it, just dont put too much force on it.

Other than that, its really easy. Remove the top cover, uncscrew another screw on the housing, pull up the housing using the handle, unclup the wires (make sure you take a pic or mark it with something so you remember which one is which). Open all the screws on the bulb housing one by one and gently remove the bulb, put new one in and repeat.

For the first couple hours, you will smell something burning but its just the bulb warming up for the first time so dont freak out.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, well I know some people who were able to get around 6000 hours off the bulb. What I would suggest is get a new bulb and once the new bulb dies, you can put in the older one and order another one during that time so there is no downtime. I had 3000 hours on mine but I decided to order it.

For the price its worth the purchase.

I was going to order from there but I had them send me lot of pictures and the burner tip seemed all black instead of silver so I ordered from this one:

I ordered from this link and now I received it. But the lable is VIP330 instead of 240. Does it mean they sent the 330W version by mistake? Or they just print anything on the lable? Not sure it is safe to install, might over heat?

I ordered the entire houseing from B&H...,. I went with them b/c I felt like I would get the OEM version for sure. I didn't want to risk newegg, ebay or amazon where I might get something cheaper... I prob could have saved $30 but it wasn't worth the risk.

I had a busy day... finally got a chance to throw it in. My old bulb had 4K hours in smart-eco mode and still looked fine but I wanted a new one before football. I now have a backup I guess in the old bulb.

Well, I undid the housing to throw in the new bulb and tried to rip the old one out... I thought I was going to rip the thing off the ceiling...... Well, I saw the other screw and thought "He's an idiot. Comes from up-bringing...."

I even had the manual open (PDF).... I also remembered I read here there are two screws. Once I got the second one out, everything was smooth.. My OCD tendencies made me spend more time readjusting the mount but everything looks good now.

Hey guys, I've got a w1070 too, but it only has about 1500 hrs on it. I've started to notice pretty bad "image blur" ? (Ex. When someone's head moves the image blurs and I can see trailing from the previous frames.)

Is it my bulb? The image seems a little darker than it used to be too. I don't think I was running it on eco mode.

Isn't it a little premature to need a new bulb?

Can I replace just the bulb, or should I get a whole new "lamp" assembly? I've never replaced a projector bulb before, but I'm decently savvy with these types of things.

I suggest you not rush. They first send me the wrong model, then replaced with one that has defect (a bubble in the glass). I have no confidence in this seller.

Why are people buying from China for $70 when they can get from Amazon fullfillment for $72? This is the cheapest I've found so far from U.S. shipper.
