I am in the process of choosing a new projector for a dedicated theater room (although it will also be used for some gaming). Because it is in a basement with very little light, a projector that excels in black levels is preferred. One projector that I kept coming back to was the Epson 8700UB- although a bit older, it is supposed to have excellent PQ. Others I was looking at were the Panasonic PT-AE4000U, Epson 3020, and Acer H9500BD. Are there any other new ones to consider in the price range that can match the 8700UB? Thanks!

If you could push that two grand a little, you could look at one of these:

Is it solipsistic in here, or is it just me?

I think that will be too much. I really should have said like under $1700. Basically what the question comes down to is it ok to get a few year old projector for supposedly better blacks or are there other advantages of the newer projectors (ie Epson 3020) that make getting one from 2010/2011 not worth it.

Advantages of a newer PJ will be warranty, longer bulb life and possibly better tech (definitely arguable though). I'd try to stick to a relatively newer PJ.

Here is one that would fit the bill:

The JVC RS Series will blow away about any other product on the market for contrast in my experience. It simply is in a different class, and generally maintains a price point which is far higher than others.

If you are looking to really get a good deal, then that find seems to be pretty solid. It certainly is the projector which will deliver the most impressive black levels for the money which I have seen recently.

B stock can be factory over runs, factory refurbs, slow moving stock...quite a lot of different things.

Give Craig Peer a call and he can fill you in on the specifics of this one:
