You know you make this comment right after I put in the order for this projector at amazon. Luckily I came in read this before anything happened. I cancelled my order. I wanted the benq in the first place but the throw distance and screen placement would have worked better with this projector. I just know I wouldn't be able to live with the color on this one. So, on the lookout for something else.

The color seems fine in practice even if it doesn't measure perfect. It's the black level that's my gripe with it, and I don't think the benq is any bette.

No the benq has better color, worse contrast I believe is the comparison. I'd rather have the color personally.

We are talking about a $700-750 projector.
It's not going to be perfect at anything.
I am quite pleased with mine considering I walked in knowing it would be a budget setup for my first setup to see how I liked projection.
I would never compare it to a higher end model though.
It's great for what it is, but don't expect the output of a higher end unit

Yeah. I just wish there was a clear model to step up to. What other DLP PJ in the 2K range has good input lag and RF 3D glasses?

I also told in chat and found that the projector had to be delivered before the credit would appear during checkout.

I was told the same thing. Amazon is one of the few companies I trust my money with.

I received my optoma at noon today. I am very happy with the picture quality. One thing that made a huge difference was using the settings that I posted earlier. It almost completely eliminates any type of noise. Granted there are some movies that just have noise no matter what you do, but I am very happy with the colors, and black levels with those settings. The noise level of the projector is also very low, this is important to me as I am 60/40 music movies. My projector also came with a lense cap. The only complaint I have is the remote and menus are far to sensitive, I have to be very fast at pushing the buttons not to go to far.

Why do I have bars on my 16:9 screen on the top and bottom, with a 16:9 projector?

You're watching a movie that is 2.35 aspect ratio. Many movies are.
16:9 movies are 1.78 (sometimes 1.85) aspect ratio. 4:3 movies are 1.33 AR.

Sounds like you're giving us good feedback about how good this projector can do with a large projection.
Maybe others can help you; I am just glad to hear such a large image can prove satisfying.
Enjoy!
I cannot question what works for you.

Dammit! I though I had found the ideal projector for what I wanted to do here, but i have some issues and was after some advice on where to go from here.

I wanted this for gaming, specifically for sim racing. This means I will be sitting at a specific distance from the screen, and the screen needs to be low or it'll be all wrong. In sim racing, you try to match the view you see to how it would be sitting in a real car, so if I ceiling mount the projector, the screen will be very high up, and that means the windscreen for the entire car will be miles too high.

So anyway, screen needs to be quite low down.

The issue is this: If i was to try a table top style position, it will have to be in front of me, and there is no space as that's where I'll be sitting, slap bang infront of the center of the screen. If i ceiling mount, screen is far too high up.

I need Lens Shifting.but the Optoma doesn't have this, in all others ways it's absolutely perfect. I do not want to use Keystone.

So what are my options at this point if i cannot go for the HD131XE? Any suggestions?

You are most certainly better with the optoma if you ceiling mount.
It has a decent. Image offset so that may work well for you to put the image low. More offset = lower image if ceiling mounted
If I wouldn't have mounted up between my joists my image would have practically been on the floor

So I tried the wow disc again last night and modified the base settings quite a but from what has been posted. I played with the blue filter for the first time and actuallyt tried to smooth out the colors.
I'm gonna watch a movie today to see what it looks like. But it was pretty far off what has been posted here soon far.

Cyrano, what do you notice the dynamic black do? I haven't even noticed any affect other than fan on high and fan squeal every few rotations

Hi PM.
My projector operates practically in another room shooting its light through a hole in the wall. So the sound fluctuations are virtually unheard.
The effects of dynamic black are subtle and if the sound is noticed I wouldn't use it. I do think the lamp is used in variable brightness mode that is so fast it is not noticable. (I am just guessing here; IDK.)

I use it and don't hear it. There was a similar feature with my previous Optoma projector, the HD70, that was so loud that I didn't use it. And I recall that one could see the dimming of the light a bit so it was not invisible in its effect. This dynamic black works, I think, and very invisibly. But the noise is not worth the slight improvement to the black level if you notice the noise, IMO.

Also, you mentioned a few posts ago how little effect the eco setting has on the brightness levels. I noticed that too. One might as well use eco and get the increased lamp life.
And if the image begins to appear dim after a couple of thousand hours just use the brighter mode. This PJ does have a good option to achieve renewed image quality as the lamp ages.

Do you have room for a short throw PJ, like the Optoma GT760? It just needs to be a few feet from the screen to throw a large image. Supposed to be an excellent low lag gaming projector.

So I think I got this thing dialed in pretty good now to my novice eyes.
Skin tones look a bit more natural. The other settings posted I found a tad too cold.
My settings do indeed seem a tad warmer but I like it.
Blacks seem to be more dialed In and whites not as bright.
Quite a bit of black shadow detail and nice black scenes, but still lose some of the detail in like black velvet clothing for example.
Deff not up to par with plasma, but again for its price range and total budget I put on my setup, I can't expect it to be.

I just watched Star Wars ep 3 and not the slightest bit of grain. I was very happy with its performance.

To cyrano: I only noticed the fan noise with the dynamic black up when the sound was low. It annoyed me then, but with a movie playing my audio over powers it easily. Lol
I just didn't notice any difference so I shut it off.
Maybe I'll play with it another day

Very disappointed by the state of my projector. Looks like it needs to go back. There is a circular"hot spot" now. Almost looks like a compact disk reflection. Hard to see with camera shot so I used filter effect to see better

I don't think it has enough offset for me. Screen will not be larger than 70inchs, so the offset goes down. The top of the screen will start 70cm below the ceiling, so it will have to hang very low off the ceiling for it to work. I also would then have to worry where i sit may actually be in the way of the bottom part of the image unless the throw distance is really short for this size of screen.

I though the benq 1070 might have been my saviour, but it's len shift is literally a few inches, too. I seem to be out of luck if i want to stick to this type of budget, nothing will work from what i can tell. I'm new to the idea of owning a projector, hence why i'm kind of learning this stuff as i go here.

Considering i will be sitting quite close to the screen, i think it's best i go with a 1980p model. also, the image will be too high up near the ceiling, it needs to be 70cm lower. I'm quite sure at this point, all models without 50% lens shift are going to be out for me. If anyone thinks differently, let me know!

So you need something with more offset.
I think mitsubishis have this. Some view sonics are like this too.
But sounds like you are gonna have to make some compromise
70 inches and down low without worrying about obstructions isn't gonna happen imo.

If you want it low, you will need to mount it low wit no offset
