I felt that also when reading over so many reviews. There seems to be Benq fanboys and they perceive everything else to be inferior. I was simply trying to make the best overall decision for my situation and with teens on xbox, family on Blu-ray and Roku and HD sports I hope this works for me.

I had picked up a Optoma HD70 with 45 hours and had only used it a couple months when I decided I would try out the Optoma HD131. I was so impressed with it that I put one in a local car clubs theater. They like me, are so very satisfied with this projector. They had 3 lens tube projectors before the HD131. I had Sony G70s in my home before the HD70. Sooner or later something better will come out for less or about the same price, but for now it is probably the most bang for the buck w/ 3D to boot. I like 3D and have 30+ 3D movies. I am 71 years old and I don't care if one might have a slight bit more or less of some gain on sharpness or gamma over another. I don't suffer from rainbows or none of that sort of problem, and a bit dimmer picture on 3D doesn't matter to me as I only watch them in a near dark room at night. Within normal viewing parameters the projector puts out a fine picture. I have noticed more problems with Blue ray DVD players and the movie quality themselves than with the projector. For a under $700 projector, it can't be beat. I don't live for perfection, I just like to enjoy the movies. I think that is what most of us want. JMHO

Fair point but the scaremongering about color reproduction is OTT as if the PJ produces a completely different color. I have calibrated the colors by comparing it with my reference grade Panasonic Plasma and I would say it looks pretty damn good. The biggest selling point of this PJ is how quiet it is. It is placed next besides the couch on a wooden stand and is super quiet with Dynamic Black turned off.

For you guys wanting cheap 3D glasses look in the "found deals" section. RF glasses at DLP link prices.

Well put. W1070 had the advantage of being the first under $1000 3D 1080p projector. And it did a very good job at capturing business from users that have never experienced FP before. So you kind of have to temper their enthusiasm a bit and really look at it's actual merits. Glad you were able to recognize this and am looking forward to what you find with the HD131xe.

Hooked Up

I have my 131 temporarily hooked up, sitting on a box on the couch with an old HDMI going to my cable box. Wow It is on cinema and I have not attempted anything yet. Wanted to get the throw right. I have it 12'3" right now and it is filling my 100" screen, so my mount will move back a foot or so. Is it best to be in the middle of the zoom or back or front?

It's still afternoon and it is bright! Can't wait to see blu-ray after dark. What a deal for $414 + tax. I purchased my Infocus X9 in 3007 for $539 and have about 7000 hours on it. Bargains!!

I did not have a chance to look at a bunch of projectors but I did go to Best Buy last week. I watched the Epson 5030 and was just not impressed. I love my plasma upstairs and I just thought the Epson was dull to me and for $2000 more than this I don't get it. Not to smash the Epson but this, and 2 Marty Cubes and cash left over!

So far I am one very happy camper!

dmeadows, besides possible lamp-hour brightness differences you're probably noticing a great feature of many inexpensive DLPs. Their contrast and brightness in fairly accurate settings are enough to tie or beat pretty much any LCD under $1800! The fact that it doesn't matter much where the particular DLP falls on the price scale and that the 131xe is one of the best looking non-RGB models certainly doesn't hurt, while even a little light in a bad-ish room will negate the high-end projectors contrast advantage.

The small amount of zoom on the 131 means it makes very little difference in brightness or sharpness and it's likely safest to aim for the middle of its range to make sure you're left with enough range to perfectly fill your screen once mounted.

Simple <$250 dedicated black-fabric theater room, build in a day, takedown in an hour.
Easy $25-40 DIY black/dark-grey ambient-light rejecting screen, grab two things from a local store..mix..roll..done.

I haven't seen the Epson 5030, but I would never base a purchasing decision on how anything is displayed at Best Buy or Fry's Electronics. From what I can tell, they are utterly clueless on how to set up a projector. It would be a bloody miracle if the 5030 you saw was properly set up.

The old rule still holds: audition audio equipment, but buy displays based on independent reviews with objective instrumented numbers. Not only was the display in a store probably never set up correctly, but you never know what color-blind store clerk last messed with it.

I have read too much good stuff about the 5030 and was so dissapointed, you are probably right and I have nave idea whether it was calibrated or not.

I did get my 131 up and watched football last 2 nights as well looking at some blu-ray scenes. I am very happy with my purchase.

They work AWESOME, much better than the dlp cheap ones I had before. No losing sync and the glasses are more comfortable too.

Hey all - been a while since I visited this thread, been enjoying our 131X too much!
Just realized today that's we've had it over 1 year, and with almost daily use it hasn't given us any trouble. Mix of ~80% 1080p TV, 10% blu ray (quite a few 3D, SO COOL), 10% youtube over AT&T UVerse.

Incredible that the 141Xe is now out for ~$450 vs the $750 I paid for the 131... but with all the enjoyment we've had with our 131 for over a year I can't complain.

I won't have any problem using the 131 for the next 3-4 years, when 4k projectors are hopefully in my price range.

pics/info of my setup:

I have had mine up for a couple of weeks now and it got a lot of use over Thanksgiving. Could not be happier at this point. I have it on economy and cinema and have not calibrated yet. I am shooting onto a homemade 100" screen made with poplar and blackout cloth. I have ordered a Disney WOW blu ray disc and will calibrate (to best of my abilities lol) over Christmas holidays.

My boys and I watched Expendables 3 blu ray from Redbox in the afternoon and plenty bright with ambient light. It blows my old projector away! LOTR extended was a different experience.

If you are looking for an under $500 projector and a $100 screen don't hesitate. I look at $2K tvs and what I have for less than $600 with mount and wire it blows my mind.

Please tell me where!?!?!? It's $599 everywhere I have been looking. I think it was a little cheaper on Newegg but their return policy sucks.

Right now I am only using the glasses that came with it but I've been meaning to get the 5150 samsungs since they are so cheap. I have heard they are just as good visually but maybe not as much in the way of comfort and they are not rechargeable.
The normal dlp glasses made my eyes feel cross-eyed and the effects worked slightly and it felt like I had to focus as if I was looking at one of those stare-o-grams they used to have. If I looked away or went to the bathroom, they would lose sync and flicker epilepsy style.
The emitter hides away on top of the projector and it's been flawless so far. The glasses are not as comfortable as some of the passive ones I have used but pretty close.

Finally I received my HD131xe After months of waiting from otpoma RMA, (Uniformity issue + flickering of colors after a while with projector shutting itself down)
They changed 3 parts (DMD chip, main board, color wheel) !!
In case someone need the part's codes, here it is (from the repair report):

70.8RU24GR01 [ Assy color wheel module for 8RU(Service) ]
80.8MQ02G001 [ PCBA DMD board for HD21 projector ]
80.8VC01G001 [ PCBA main board for HD25e projector ]

- Regarding uniformity issue: I certainly saw an improvement, but I don't consider it as completely fixed, there is still some focus issue in upper part when you sharpen the lowest part of screen (or vice versa)

Amazon Warehouse Deals do not come with a warranty, either from Amazon or the Manufacturer:

http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=10158976011

[at the bottom of the page]

Do products come with a warranty?

No. Used products generally do not come with a manufacturer's warranty but all of our items are backed by Amazon’s return policy. If you would like additional protection, you can purchase a warranty from Square Trade to cover certain items.

What projector are these settings for? I have the Optoma hd141x, will these work for that?

1. The gamma seems to change when you change the color space from YUV to Auto (I have my BD player configured to YUV)

2. If I have my White set to -10, 4, -16 and change the green to 5, the third white bar from the right on the DVE Reverse grey ramp dramatically changes color. 4 produces a much more bluer grey, 5 produces a much more reddish. It is not a smooth transition as it is when changing any other value. Also, I noticed that the smooth gradient at the top ceases to not be smooth with some banding, but that there are darker bands after lighter ones. I attached a picture to illustrate. Playing around with contrast and brightness just shift the location/number of the bands, but you do see the dark band to the left of a lighter one, if that makes any sense. Is this normal behavior? I am using a cheaper HDMI cable from a few years ago that I used with an older 720p projector, but my understanding is that if there was a cable issue, I would be getting sparkles, not banding. Is that correct?
