I've had my Planar PD7150 projector since 2008 and the 3rd bulb just blew. Trying to decide whether to buy another replacement bulb or whether to buy one of the current budget projectors, such as Acer H6510BD, Viewsonic PJD7820HD, Optoma HD131XE, Benq W1070, Epson 2000/2030. I know the advantages of the current projectors are 1080p, 3D, and brightness, but how do they compare for contrast, black level, sharpness, and image noise?

What would you do?

I bought a very similar Planar 7130 in the 2008 woot deal. I now own the sharp Z30000, which probably has a slightly better picture than the Benq w1070 you mention. Anyway, when i first got the sharp, i wasn't exactly blown away by the differences. The biggest improvement was elimination of the SDE at my seating distance, and that was always my biggest issue with the Planar. So, resolution is also better, but the improvement is less noticeable on Fios than say blu ray. Contrast and black levels are only incrementally better, though i've noticed better shadow detail. Noise is also incrementally (though noticeably) better. For me, motion has taken a step back in terms of judder-type effects, but i really haven't seen anyone else mentioning that about the z30000...Anyway, i've come to appreciate the sharp more over time, especially when viewing blu rays. So, even though my description of the improvements doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement, it would be hard to go back to the planar now. I'd say that if factors like resolution and reduction in SDE are priorities for you, then something like the w1070 might be worth it. You might not really notice much improvement in other areas...OTOH, new bulbs are pretty cheap smile.gif

Thanks for the reply. You're right, bulbs are insanely cheap ($103). Tough decision.
