All,

I have been planning on buying an Optoma HD131Xe for the bonus room in my new house. The room is approx 25ft x 14ft. Will project on a 106in screen (was planning on 1.8 gain). I want the room to be more of a family room and not a dedicated home theater. So, for sports, etc there will be ambient light. Not too much as there will really only be one window, but I don't want everything blacked out when friends are over for the game. Anyhow, a friend just offered to sell me his used Epson 8700UD for $1500 with low hours on the lamp (don't know how many). I read reviews and still don't have an idea which would be best for me. Of course, the Optoma's price point is much better, but thats not a deal breaker if the Epson is a much better pj for my needs.

Any opinions?

Thanks for all of the help!

I would take the 131x and I would go with a much lower gain screen like 1.2 to 1.4 gain instead of the 1.8 gain which may hurt viewing angle significantly.

The Optoma is more than bright enough for that size screen in a room with some controlled ambient light.

Considering that a refurbished 8700UB with a 2 year warranty went for $1450 (paid for mine) SHIPPED..... and that was over a year ago. I'd think twice about that and go with a new projector.

The 8700 has very good blacks, but the Optoma's don't eat bulbs like they are going out of style.

Welcome to the darkside.....
