It is a big question, the choice of projector as you know depends on what you want to watch on it. I personally prefer LCD and since Epson holding the patents for LCD systems, you get the best technology with the best price with Epson when it comes to LCD.
Are you planning to switch to 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 screen down the road? if yes, take it into consideration. Almost none of the low end projectors come with scaling but you can grab a DVDO Edge Green for about $350 (another good product phasing out) to do the scaling for you, it has the same video processor as its bigger brother which costs over $1000. Now Panamorph offering anamorphic lenses less than $2000, I think everyone should have an ultra-wide.
Mitsubishi is another option since they are getting out of projector business and prices are going down due to this. You may pick up a great projector with a great price. They will be honouring the warranty. But Mits. are not as bright as Epsons.
I hope this confuses you more :-)
