What DLP projectors under 3 grand have the very darkest, inkiest, richest, black levels? The kind where you can barely see the where the screen ends and where the wall starts. It will be used in light controlled room.

Yes, I wonder that myself.

IME none touch JVC (LCoS), and this is a failing on the part of TI and their manufacturers. Or, perhaps it is the failing of consumers to want to buy more quality.

If you want A DLP with good blacks (not a dynamic iris) then you need to look at high end models or used high end like Planar, Runco, Sim2 and others in the 2008-2012 Over $5000 original MSRP or new stuff in the category. I recently purchased a use Planar PD8150 (2008-2010) same design as the current Runco LS5 that I am very happy with.. inky black bars ..not really, but a perfectly focused edge to edge, super sharp, color accurate, superb shadow detail, quiet operations and a punchy picture with lens shift, I wouldn't trade it for anything current under $4000. I paid less the $2000 and yes it only puts out 1000 lumen but on a 110" HP 2.8 on eco I get 20fl as measured at my seat with a colorimeter. I had a new sharp Z30K and with the iris on it was blacker than what i have but that was the least important of the traits.. I will take a pin sharp focus with fantastic ansi contrast and not so great black bars any day (hate the iris). If you want new, check out coderguys thread, as he has personally reviewed many of the newer projectors.
Hey Dylan.. did you buy a 30K?

It's one of the last 1080p DLP units I want to check out. I'm sure it's no PD8150, but it seems to be one of the best performing 2D and 3D units under $3000.

I never tired the 3D, but I am thinking that is it's strongest asset unless the copy I got was not up to par.
