Hey guys I'm new to this whole projector thing so bare with me. My son is trying to hook up his Playstation 4 to our old PLV-Z4 projector but he is having an audio issue. The projector has 1 HDMI INPUT but NO AUDIO OUPUT >OR< external speakers! What do we need to do to get some speakers hooked up to get the sound to work. Here is a picture of the projector's inputs etc:

Thanks for ANY help!

Projectors are like computer monitors, not TVs. They don't (typically) have integrated audio, it keeps costs down and doesn't provide for poor sound.

So, you need something which can pull audio off the HDMI connection, then pass the video on to the projector.

A cheap A/V receiver and speakers will do this quite nicely.

Accessories4Less has packaged systems WITH speakers starting at about $230.

http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/category/HTIB/Home-Audio/Packaged-Systems/1.html

Please note! There are 'cheaper' solutions out there, but they aren't much cheaper and they will limit future functionality, usage, growth, and quality. So, it is typical to get a bit better of a system like this model which will work well:
http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/DENDHT1513BA/DENON-DHT-1513BA-Home-Theater-System-w/Boston-Acoustics-Speakers/1.html

For just a bit less, you could pick up just the A/V receiver...
http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/category/AVReceiver/Home-Audio/Home-Theater-Receivers/1.html

and a set of cheap speakers...
http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/YAMNSAP2600BL/YAMAHA-NS-AP2600-Satellite-Speaker-Package/1.html

But, I would get the package as it is a better deal overall.

Also, I'm not sure if the PS4 offers ANY other connectivity besides HDMI, but if it does, there are still more and cheaper (worse) solutions which will work.

Heck, if it ONLY offers HDMI, and you just need audio decoding, then you can use a set of powered computer speakers and a HDMI audio extractor.

That is this:

Which will give you a 1/8" mini stereo output.

Don't think of it as irritating, just understand that a projector should be thought of exactly like a computer monitor. You wouldn't expect your computer monitor to have integrated sound, so you would get external speakers.

Since home theater projectors, generally go into home theaters, they design them without audio. It keeps pricing down and allows the focus to be on the best image quality possible for the money.

Business class projectors typically do have small speakers in them as they are often used 'on the go'.

Many of the larger, 'fixed installation', business class projectors don't have speakers, because they are designed for larger spaces so integrated small speakers would be useless in a large space.

It's more about knowing what you have, but it is good that you asked. Feel free to do so in the future before you get irritated! biggrin.gif

Something like this might help:

http://www.ebay.com/bhp/hdmi-audio-extractor

Insert it in line before the projector and send the red and white line outs to your home receivers Line in or video channel. or buy a standalone system and hook it to that- Bohanna

It is worth adding that the PS4 does appear to have a digital optical audio output.

So, besides the options I listed above, which included a HDMI audio extractor, you could just use a Digital Optical to RCA adapter, and set the PS4 settings to output PCM audio in the 'audio settings' setup, then run those RCA connectors to a home theater system, or some PC speakers as you want.

I have used this (I believe) from Amazon with my AppleTV with great results...
http://www.amazon.com/SANOXY%C2%AE-AGPtek-Digital-Optical-Converter/dp/B005DIRI6I/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1386779903&sr=8-4&keywords=digital+to+analog+audio+converter
get a optical audio cable:
http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Digital-Optical-Audio-Toslink/dp/B001TH7GSW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1386780001&sr=8-1&keywords=optical+audio+cable
and then a set of the powered speakers I linked above, like these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836121019

About $50 shipped for the above VERY usable audio setup.

Overall, you have a bunch of options which run from about $40 for CHEAP basic stereo, to several hundred dollars (or far more) for a full-fledged surround setup.
