I'm seeing the PT-AE8000 on US sites for $2,049 after a $350 rebate but in Canada it's $2,999 to $3,499 and no rebate. That's $1,000-$1,500 more in Canada! What gives???

You're getting screwed.

Order from one of the US vendors and have it delivered to a UPS Store close to the border. Drive down, pick it up, bring it back, pay the taxes (on the lower US price) and take it home.

If you ever need warrantee service you will have to take it south again, but that's pretty uncommon.

LOL yeah totally! Unfortunately the rebate won't apply because I live in Canada. But even without the rebate it's still cheaper! :/

Have the rebate mailed to the UPS Store as well. If you ask, they may even be able to forward it to you for a smallish fee.

Before you make a purchase, get some quotes from online resellers (like Eastporters, among others), and remember that the Canadian dollar is currently at a 4 year low - so make sure to account for the exchange rate, credit card exchange fee (if used) and transportation costs. Not saying there aren't possibly savings to be had by importing, but those projectors are available in Canada for significantly less than 3000 dollars.

Even allowing for the rebate, 2049 USD = 2277 CAD today. Using most credit cards (or Paypal), that will be assessed up to an additional 3% for the 'convenience' of exchanging it for you - so the 2277 becomes 2345.00. And that is before transportation costs, and the need to handle any possible future warranty issues by shipping back to the US (also additional shipping $ and time). Doesn't hurt to solicit some pricing to compare - in my experience the best prices are to be found where they don't (or can't) advertise their selling price online, and you have to get a quote from them. You may be surprised ... smile.gif
