They probably have pennies in whole boards and just change what's broken. I saved $500 on the Sony and feel if it was to break in or out of warranty, I'm still ahead. That is if Sony is as good as Lg from a service standpoint. My thought is, I have an Optoma H79 that is 10 years old. I still use it in a bedroom. Bought an extended warranty and never used it. I bought the LG from a authorized dealer and never had a warranty repair but had it fixed out of warranty. If I had saved over $300 by buying from ebay I would have come out ahead. Now I have a $500 savings to use for repair now or when the warranty expires.
Yeah, that's my philosophy. The money saved can be used to repair if need be. Sony products have always been solid for me. Still have a rear projection TV from 2002 going strong.

What difference does it make if the invoice says $2,499 if it's not purchased from a Sony approved dealer? Or are you hinting the dealer is Sony approved but selling these on the sly?

It's shipping straight from the sony warehouse, he put the order in for me with his wholesale account and the tracking states that.
Thanks for your concern.

has anyone done a comparison between the 40es and 55es? it's about $1500 cost difference but is it worth paying more for the 55es for a non videophile? The money saved with the 40es though would cover a significant portion of getting a nice screen

If you are building your first home theater, get the HW40. It throws a great picture for the money. Unless you compare them side by side, you won't know the difference. Put the money saved towards a screen - that is a good plan. Sometime in the future, you can upgrade to a 4K projector ( if and when they come down to earth in price ) - then you can get more picky!

I think i'm ready to take the plunge and order a sony vpl-hw40es.I've only seen the 55es demo but if this is close then I think I'llbe very happy. Just to be sure though I wanted to post some pics ofmy soon to be media room and make sure this projector is right forme. I've taken pics showing blinds open and closed (still allowsreasonable amount of light). Front wall height is about 92in and from behind the bar stool to window on opposite end is 155in. I figure subtract at 3 feet for thescreen size (ie about 110in screen). From front of room to back is26.5 feet so I think I can't mount this in the back. There are two ceilingfans which may have to be removed if I mount on ceiling. What I wasthinking was to have two levels of tiered seating 12ft back and15feet back and perhaps build a short wall behind the chairs on thesecond level to place the projector. Thoughts/suggestions? What about white vs grey screen for this setup?

If you happen to live near a Best Buy that actually has one in stock, you can pick one up for $1,999.98 right now. Sadly I couldn't find one in stock anywhere near me. The BB in Norwalk CT has them but I'm not driving 20 hours to save $500!

I called Sony to see if they would price match and they said they cannot because it is not supposed to be a discountable product. The supervisor I spoke to even said they will have to report best buy for selling it under MSRP!

Wow, Sony moves fast. Price on Best Buy is back up to $2499.98 already.

no bestbuy near me has it in stock I had a 10% off coupon for moving but they won't take that either by placing order in store because sony products are on the list of exclusions. I'm calling the AV Science store tomorrow to see what pricing they have

Edit: i'm waiting to talk with manager to see if they'll let me place order at online price for delivery

They let you order it? Cool. There may be one on the other side of town from me. If that doesn't work out, I'll try and order one.

I was able to pick one up today they seem to have only one unit in all of long island and queens seems strange they have no stock, its new and they deeply discounted it I wonder if they really meant to do that

as far as the 3d I heard I can use the PlayStation 3d glasses with this (discontinued but cheap on ebay)

Also anyone know is the distance really limited to 15 ft from screen would a HP screen reflect further?

Price appears to have change back while the store was verifying the inventory.
Fortunately the store that I called, overrode the price back and said that they will ship it to me.

Dumb question, but what kind of ceiling mount can I use with this? I checked the user manual and it only talks about Sony's $1000 ceiling mount... would either of these from monoprice work?

http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_i...seq=1&format=2
http://www.monoprice.com/Product/?pg...mat=4#feedback

If I understand page 75 of the user manual it looks like there are three mounting holes placed 5.125" apart. So I think the mount in the first link above will work, but the second one will NOT work. Sound accurate?

Edit again: I just watched this video and it looks like the holes shown in the manual are not the mounting holes, as it looks like they are more than 5 & 1/8" apart. Can anyone tell me how far apart the mounting holes actually are? Thanks!!

Correct. I have been using the PS 3D glasses with the HW40ES and they work fine (although they are not the comfortable).

15ft for what?

My seating distance it 12ft. My components are almost 30 ft from the screen. Right now I am projecting on sheetrock while waiting for my screen to arrived. Both 2D and 3D picture look fine at 30ft away while adjusting components. If there is a range for the 3D glasses, it is definitely more than 15ft.

the manual said projector and seats had to be no more the 15 ft away for 3d glasses to sync but you seem to say your projector is 30 ft away and it works i hope this works for me i just order a few pairs of those glasses

as far as mount i made this one 10 yr ago was going to revise it for sony i added a 2nd piece of plexi bolted mounting screw thru that to hold projector and used had the other screw with wing nuts and springs going thru both pices of plexi to adjust vert and horizontal i hope this makes sense if you need i will post pic
i thoght using two seperat set of screws was less stress and torsion on mount holes in projector when you make adsjustments

My DIY mount for L300u $20 :)

I am thinking about upgrading to the HW40, and am hoping to get some advice. I currently have a Sony HS10 (1366x768) in my 20x14 foot dedicated theater/listening room. There are no windows, but the room admittedly does not have great light control - oak paneled walls, white sound absorbing ceiling, light green carpet. The HS10 is mounted 15 ft from the screen. The screen is an old pull-down 4x3 Draper (no idea about how reflective it is, bought it from a want ad), and I currently get about a 96 inch diagonal widescreen image). Room is mostly used for high def TV and music, occasional movies. I haven't made the leap to Blue Ray yet but will probably try it after this upgrade. For TV, sometimes watch with room lights down to a "medium" level, and the HS10 is bright enough for that.

Questions
  1. Is the HW40 a good replacement choice?
  2. Anyone know whether the HW40 will work with my existing mount from the HS10
  3. Any suggestions for a replacement screen, and what that might cost? I'm hoping to move up to about 106
inch diagonal screen. I don't mind a fixed screen, as I almost never let the current screen up.

An area of concern is that I don't want the image to be too bright - my wife is sensitive to too much light, and I don't want to run her out with the new projector.

Good thing I didn't read the manual.

My projector is mounted on the ceiling, 16 ft from the screen. My seating is 12 ft from the screen. My equipment is in a separate room, about 30 ft from the screen.

Until I have everything set up (still building the room) my IR remotes do not have line of sight to my received. I must go to the separate room to change volume, etc. That puts me about 30ft from the screen when doing so. I have had no problem with 3D sync at that distance.

If I leave the room entirely for a few moments while wearing the 3D glasses (beyond the 30ft and no line of sight to the screen) it will lose 3D sync (as expected in an IR system with no LOS). As soon as I come back to the equipment area and look towards the screen (30ft away) I can "see" the glasses get 3D sync (there is a noticeable change).

Hope this helps.

Also - if your configuration ends up being a problem for the built-in 3D emitter, you have two options. Sony sells an IR 3D emitter which plugs into the unit. That should correct any issues in your room. The other option is something like the Xpand RF setup. This plugs into the projector and gives you the ability to use RF glasses.

I have W5000 for years and now HW40 for a week. I can say HW40 is in different league if you watch it in a light/reflection controlled room. As long as W5000 has about the same native contrast as W1070, HW40 will be much better in 2D.

I am way across the pond living in the U.A.E., but I got if for $1998! It took me a while to find it, but obviously I'm really glad I did. I saved beaucoup $$$, not including having it shipped here.
