SP4805 owner is looking for a replacement.

I used to own a SP4805 and was very satisfied with the video quality, especially the black level, contrast ration and shadow details. I am looking for a inexpensive 1080P projector to replace it (I have sold 4805). From reviews, looks like a lot of budget projectors are not good at black level and shadow details. For example, SP4805 has a native 2000:1 contrast ratio which I can tell is TRUE. But reviews said projectors like 1070 has a 900:1 contrast ratio.

I wonder if you can recommend a replacement with comparable black level, contrast ration and shadow details. Thanks in advance.

What's the high end of your budget?

Around $2000 there are choices measuring 4000:1-6000:1 contrast, but cheaper than $1900 you're pretty much trapped in the 1500:1 and under zone.

I've heard the w1070 is around 1200:1 and can go higher if you don't mind things like brilliantcolor and less perfect white-balance.

Black levels on the W1070 are decent (but not spectacular), but contrast-wise, it's been measured at between 1500-2000:1 which isn't far off your requirement.

See:
http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/proje...the-bench.html
(Measured around 1500:1)

...and:

http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/the...000-projector/

(Geoffrey measured around 2000:1)

My guess is that's measured with SmartEco Lamp mode, which produces a degree of dynamic brightness along with extended lamp life.

The W1070 is around $700-$800
If you can stretch your budget to $2.5k, the Sony HW40ES will do even higher (5500:1); but you do pay for that increase... It's not the 'inexpensive' you're looking for.

I suspect the W1070 should comfortably beat out the SP4805 in most other respects.

Most projectors will have to be mounted a lot closer than that 4805 and will be a lot brighter which may also affect the perceived contrast with the higher black-levels. A NDF or low-gain screen can help take things down if you prefer it dark and similar to the 4805.

Thanks for the contrast links Kreetures. That makes more sense as the w1070 had better contrast when I was comparing it to my LG and P300 and the 300 measures around 1100:1-1200:1. Granted, I only had the contrast below 47-49 once to try someone else's settings, so I was mostly enjoying the Benq with most/all of its CR to see how big the difference would look.
