It is fine though I doubt it would be very effective. Most of the action is on the inside. However, it does make a cosmetic difference and it is always good to have unobstructed airflow from the four internal fans.
Is it necessary though? The manual says it needs minimal maintenance and says absolutely nothing about vacuuming or dust inside the unit. I imagine it's not likely to harm anything......right?
Just did it for preventative maintenance. My previous projector had issues because I didn't protect it properly during a flooring renovation where I had to power chip up some old tile. So now I'm paranoid about dust.
I had to clean out the entire insides of my projector when I replaced the lamp at nearly 5k hours, because of all the dust that accumulated inside it was overheating.
So yes, clean out the projector often using a q-tip. I had to send mine in to get fixed because I broke a wire so be careful. But it is possible to clean out the insides, but be warned that you could inadvertently blow dust particles into the optics which aren't 100% sealed despite manufacturer's claims to the contrary. Be super careful with compressed air cans too. I held mine upside down for a sec and liquid came out and sprayed onto the DMD and the mirror and we had to take it apart and clean it up, it was a real pain. Then I broke the wire when putting it back together.
Truth is, is even if you don't want to open up the projector, the second you put in a new bulb it will likely overheat and require you to.
And the most important parts to get clean : are
a) ALL the fans, including the blower that's in the middle bottom underneath the electronics, and is IMPOSSIBLE to reach without taking it all apart
b) the heatsinks, which are also pretty tough to clean up but do-able with a q-tip and some compressed air. But be careful to never hold the compressed air sideways or upside down like I did, or liquid will come out and possibly add splotches in the optics. Cleaning that is a REAL pain.
