What projectors have you compared your 45es to? And how does the black levels compare?

ready to pick up the 45ES

Hello guys I would like to order this PJ ASAP since my old one just kicked the bucket. Looking for a good deal on the 45ES, please PM me where to buy it from.

Also, this PJ will be placed on a shelf on the back wall and will be shooting its video at a 120" diag. screen on the front wall. The distance from the lens to the screen is 17.5 feet. The room is completely dark and the screen is a Da-Lite High Power. (Hoping this projector will work in this type of setup.)

Thanks everybody.

I'm returning it. I've probably watched about 10 movies on it so far but there is a very distracting and abnormally loud noise coming from it. Other than the black levels and short throw distance, I've been very happy with it.

I bought mine in store at Worldwide Stereo. Most places you buy it from will be around the same price. Now there is one technique you could try. Not exactly advisable but you could try to price match tvsuperstores.com prices at Best Buy or another price matching retailer. Keep in mind, do NOT buy from tvsuperstores as they are 100% a scam. Just look up reviews on them.

No time for this, I can pay the $2K but need an authorized dealer that will ship fast. Best Buy will not work because they take 8 days to deliver it and I need it sooner. So its down to these two:

(1) Amazon.com (Sold by Worldwide Stereo)
(2) Projector People

Anybody else that can deliver in 2 days?

EDIT: Just called both, wwstereo will deliver Monday, pp tomorrow! (Friday). I hope I don't regret buying from them.

Calculator at Projector Central says 17.5 feet is no problem.

Any Canadians get their hands on one of these yet? I pre-ordered mine back near the beginning of May from eastporters. Hope to get my sweaty hands on it soon...the wait is getting more and more difficult as I see posts in this thread.

I ordered from Eastporters as well. Latest I heard was they are expecting them late this week or next week and then shipping out to preorders. I imagine we'll be another couple of weeks yet.

None of my local stores have the 45ES in stock yet either.

Thanks guys, I went with projector people mainly because they promised me next day delivery ... no tax, no shipping, paid their asking price.

When I get it I'll fire it up and post first impression here. (I had to get it quick because I got people coming over on Sunday to watch the European soccer final so hopefully this PJ will not disappoint.)

We've been watching on the ESPN app from an Apple TV 4 and the visuals are pretty good. Using the Game mood from the presets also worked well but forgot to check how it was using the TV and BRT TV modes.

OK guys, as promised the 45ES arrived yesterday (exactly 24 hours from ordering it) and I plugged it into my setup in 5 minutes. Dark 20'x20' room, PJ mounted on a shelf on back wall 6.5 feet above floor, lens at 17.5 feet from a 120" Dalite-HP screen, PJ located dead center of screen in horizontal direction. I used the test pattern on the remote to set the vertical and horizontal offsets and the zoom and focus rings on the lens to clean up the image. Since I am not a pro I did not attempt any other calibrations and used whatever settings SONY has dialed in from the factory.

All I can say is WOW! This thing is so bright and punchy with all the tiny details clearly visible ... wife said it's quite a bit brighter than our 75" TV. It's as if we are watching video on a giant 120" plasma screen ... this PJ is a light cannon! You can see the little soccer players running around the field with such clarity you think you are sitting in the stands watching the game live. We also played a couple of movies in CINEMA FILM-2 mode and the image is still popping off the screen.

Question for the pros here: how do you set this PJ in low lamp mode? When I try to do that through the MENU and then "Lamp Setting" it asks if I just replaced the lamp to which I reply "no" and then it kicks me out of the setting. Do I say "yes" to that question or is there another way to set the lamp to low intensity? Thanks.

In summary, this should serve us well for at least 3-4 years or until the true 4K-resolution units get near the $2K mark.

To drop the projector into “eco-mode” the setting is found in Cinema Black Pro, on the main menu.

Thanks Brian, this works. I note that after doing this for the FILM 2 mode I had to change the lamp setting for each one of the other video modes as well. Maybe there is a way to do this once for all modes simultaneously but it only took an extra minute to do it one-at-a-time.

FYI, black levels are outstanding. I can't measure black levels but could easily see the small folds in an actor's all black leather jacket ... this is a great PJ. Also, unlike my old Samsung that croaked I can barely hear this thing, they have done a great job suppressing the humming noise. It's pretty quiet.

Anyone else think it's taking a real long time for a review(s) to surface on this projector?

Could just be my ignorance of course.. I just don't see any out there. Seems like a great unit.

I just see people liking the 5030UB better than the HW45ES when viewing side by side. Plus the 5040UB is coming.

One was here somewhere and the others were French/German Google translations.

If you don't like the auto iris, the Sony may be better.
4K on the horizon...is this a bad time to buy a projector?

The fair comparison is the 5030UB and HW40ES as they were both released around the same time and were seen as direct competitors in their price range. I've read a ton of professional reviews and owner comments and it seems to be about a 50-50 split on which model is favored. Each has areas where it's superior, and those who value different aspects of performance over others tend to gravitate toward the model they consider best at what's most important to them. Critically, they sold for the same street price much of the time.

The 5040UB and HW45ES will no longer be direct competitors for many. The HW45ES offers improvements over the HW40ES while lowering the cost. The 5040UB takes a big step forward with pixel shifting while raising the cost. There's now a $1,000 difference in msrp that will have a major influence on purchase consideration along with the choice between 1080p vs. faux 4K.

The dialog is entirely in German so most of us will need to translate the comments to see that this may have only been a cosmetic issue rather than a true "defect as the screen image was not affected but a person viewing the lens itself could observe some apparently flaws in the glass.

From what I read in the translation, they are scratches. Not a defect in a manufacturing sense but certainly a reason to get a replacement.

I agree. Only thing I can think of is that Sony doesn't feel they need the advertising yet. 45es is selling based on being an improvement over the successful 40es alone.

I know this was a common problem with the 40es, but does anyone else get the thermal expansion popping sound from their 45es? Mine is ceiling mounted on a peerless and happens about an hour into a movie after starting it up and normally doesn't happen after that. Fans are nice and quiet and the pj is awesome besides that. Briefly had a 40es before this and never happened. Kind of annoying since you're almost waiting for it, but not sure it is worth the hassle or warrants swapping it out for that. Thanks
