Optoma HD8000 versus Acer 5360

Hey guys, I have a quick question for those of you that are more knowledgeable about projectors than I am. I currently have an Acer 5360 that I am setting up in my dedicated theater room. The Acer is my weak link as my mains are modified DIY Fusion 15's (each with a JBL-2226) built into a baffle wall. The room also has four 18" ported subs and two additional 15" ported subs. It's a nice room and the audio is great. The video, however is lacking. I purchased the Acer used because I was in such a tight budget that it was all I could afford.

Anyway, I now have the opportunity to purchase a used Optoma HD8000 for $250 locally. I am just wondering if this older HD8000 is a worthy upgrade to my Acer 5360?

I still use an Optoma HD80 (essentialy the same as the HD8000) which I have been using since the summer of 2007. It continues puts out a very nice, sharp picture using the large .95" chip. The lens on that projector is rather long-throw which suits my dedicated room fine. It has a 6X color wheel so RBE is not a problem. ANSI contrast is very good. I have it ceiling-mounted. It does have quite a bit of a lens offset so I have it mounted well above the top of the screen. Originally, I used it sitting on a low table. I think I paid around $2500 back then so you are getting a pretty good projector for one-tenth the price. I don't know anything about the Acer however. I did pick up a BenQ 2050 which I use for 3-D projection.

It sounds like the Optoma HD8000 is a huge step up in performance from my lowly Acer h5360, and at $250 it seems logical that I should purchase it.

The only thing is that it is a long throw and my room is rather small at 14ft wide x 14ft deep x 8ft tall. My screen is 112" wide and 63" tall. I know this screen size is way too big for either the HD8000 or my Acer h5360 but the screen has to be this size to hide my LCR's and I am not too terribly concerned with the fact that the video side of my HT room is not going to be up to par with the audio.

I wish that I could find a used PJ that would be better for the screen size that I am stuck using.

The BenQ 1070 and its various newer models can display a 112" x 63" image from 10'9" to 14'. Close to your price range in a manufacture refurb or many available in the used market.
