We're still trying to get a SIM HD2+ for the show.

We will have screens and samples from Stewart, Dalite, Vutec, Carada, and Screen Research.

Infocus may have representatives in person for a presentation on the 777, 7205, and 4805 PLUS have given us free reign to use them INDEPENDENTLY in the shootout.

We will have a Bravo D1 DVD player as a giveaway on day one, a D2 as a giveaway on day 2.

Projectors will be shown sequentially with about an hour devoted to each - we are thinking 5 a day.

We hope to have all projectors ISF calibrated prior to the event.

Tentative schedule:

Day One: 10 am - 12 pm: General Front Projection/HDTV Presentation plus Q and A OR Infocus presentation

12 - 1 pm - Lunch Break

1 - 6 pm - Projector Shootout

After 6, we're all heading to the bar and restaurant. Inebriated Q and A session to follow, for anyone wanting to hang around!

Day Two: 10 am - 12 pm: Screens! Comparison between greys and whites

12 - 1 pm - Food!

1 - 6 pm - Projector Shootout part two

The actual schedule may be massaged a bit, but the dates and location are now LOCKED IN.

E-mail me or Brad at the addresses below for more. We hope to see many of you there!

I saw the new infocus 777 model at the hometheater show in NYC today.... it's the new flag ship 3 chip DLP.. they demo'd HD movie from DVHS source.... OH MY GOD ... STUNNING color and resolution... I would say in between smooth CRT, and CRISP DLP..

it was clear, vibrant, smooth yet crisp... it was faboulous.. Price ? Infocus rep said $35,000

I saw it at CES, and have to second your comments. I'm anxious to see how it looks compared to the new 7205, which possesses many of the qualities you mentioned. Guess we'll see in a few weeks!

Quick note - right now we are planning on doing higher end projectors Saturday, and sub $5000 projectors on Sunday. This may change depending on Infocus's involvement.

Since the 4805 seems to be the hot projector on this forum right now, a question - will most of you be using component or DVI input?

Thanks!

I intend to start with component and will upgrade to DVI only if it seems there is a major increast in image clarity, etc. DVI for me would require a new DVD player with DVI output.

Mark T.

P.S. - very eager to hear the results of your shootout. Mainly I'm eager to see if you actually receive an actual 4805, only rumored to exist up to this point.

Soundtrackman's plan and situation exactly mirrors mine. I would love to hear the feedback for both inputs, but if I had to choose one I would choose component.

I agree. I'll be starting with component, only moving to DVI if there is a major increase in image. I would choose component for now.

I would say yes, we will actually have one there, as we are all getting trained on the unit that Friday, and Infocus has agreed to let us have the unit for the weekend.

John,

Just out of curiosity, are there plans to evaluate the cheaper projectors comparing the component and DVI inputs? Since you are asking which one most of us will be using, I assume the answer is no. Although I am most interested in the component results, if each projector is just allowed one type of input I would hate to have the 4805 compete at a disadvantage if the others are using DVI. ;)

Thx!

How I wish I lived closer (or was independently wealthy and could fly there). Sounds like a good time guys.

Couple of questions... what do you plan on using for source material? DVD, HD, SD? How are you going to play it back? Strictly stand-alone equipment, or will you be using scalers and HTPCs? I'd hate to have the reviews based strictly on stand-alone equipment, but understand the complications that arise from other elements. Anyway, just curious ;)

Someday maybe I'll actually WATCH my projector...

Thanks for all of your answers, everyone. We plan to use my HTPC as the primary source - I can play DVDs, standard definition TV, and HD all from the hard drive. The output is DVI from an ATI Radeon 9600XT.

I will also bring a generic/middle of the road DVD player and feed through component if there are specific requests to do so on a given projector. Obviously there is interest that I do so on the 4805, so I will.

Thanks!

In answer to a question that keeps coming up:

No, there is no admission fee for the show.

Can you include the Pannie 500 on your under $5K day. Same distributor as Knoll. Maybe they'll let you borrow one.

It would be nice to see the Z2/500/4805 head-to-head. These are (4805 will be) the hottest sub $3K projectors for the remainder of this year.

I would, but we are at 10 projectors already. Every other shootout I've done has required about an hour per projector, and we want to have time to answer questions, etc. Brad and I are gonna be lucky not to end up with laryngitis after talking for two days straight...

Here is the latest:

Keith from Infocus will be there on Saturday morning to give a small presentation on the Infocus line-up. The cool thing there is that they are absolutely fine with the fact that we are going to be putting all of these pieces up against the other projectors we will have at the show.

Stewart is working on sending us some screens right now. I'd like to have as big a screen as possible for the 777 since it is 2000 lumens and is designed for large screens. Our goal - to have a Firehawk and a StudioTek.

We are planning on bringing Brad's HCCV if we can figure out a way to transport it (it's a home made frame made partially of plywood).

Mike from Sencore is trying to make it out as well. Sencore makes the ISF calibration tools, so I'm hoping that Mike, and our ISF tech Chip, will give a presentation on ISF calibration.

Lastly, Vinc is already sold out of D1 DVD players, so we are going to giveaway two D2s instead. The only catch is that they may not be shipping in time for the show, so winners may get a raincheck.

That's the latest!

One more comment - the Bravo D2 has arrived at Vinc, so we should have them for the show!

OK, we have a list of screens that are going to be present:

123" Greyhawk
110" Firehawk
110" Carada Brilliant White
92" Carada High Contrast Grey

Many thanks to Stewart and Carada for getting these screens together last minute! Both companies have been EXTREMELY HELPFUL in getting screens to us in time for the show!

We will also have screen samples from Vutec (Silverstar), Dalite (almost all of their materials), and Screen Research (the woven acoustic screen).

Too bad you couldn't get a Optoma H30. I was hoping to see it give the 4805 an old fasioned little guy vs titan whoopin. :)

Actually we do sell the H30, we just don't have the time to show that many projectors this time around! If someone wants to bring one, that's cool, but we won't be able to do a full presentation on it.

OK, here is our schedule. Please keep in mind that this could change if a projector doesn't show up, work, or we have a strong request from those present to change the order:

Saturday, June 5th

10-11 am: Front Projection basics, Q and A
11-12 am: Infocus presentation
12-1 pm: Break for Lunch
1-2 pm: Screenplay 777
2-3 pm: JVC HX-1
3-4 pm: Screenplay 7205
4-5 pm: Sharp XV-Z12000
5-6 pm: Studio Experience 50HD

Sunday June 6th

10-11 am: Screens
11-12 am: BenQ PE8700
12-1 pm: Break for Lunch
1-2 pm: Optoma H76
2-3 pm: Screenplay 4805
3-4 pm: Screenplay 5700
4-5 pm: NEC HT-1100
5-6 pm: Studio Experience 2HD (Sanyo Z-2 clone)

That's it! I have not heard from JVC today regarding the HD2K. As soon as I do, I will let everyone know.

Just to make things clear, we are not buying everyone lunch! There are plenty of places to eat in and around the Marriott, most of them chains (Colorado is chain crazy, for some reason).

We are excited to meet everyone and we will do our best to put on a good show!

You can dream. One thing I do expect is a consensus that all the projectors give a great picture. 3 or 4 years ago opinions may have been way different.
