It looks like DLP is starting to take notice of the high performing HD LCD models which have come this generation and is doing it best to keep its footing as "top dog" in the digital projection scene:

BenQ will also expand its line of home theater projectors with the PE7700, which features DLP HD2+ technology, a 2500:1 contrast ratio and WXGA resolution. Available in early March, the PE7700 marks a new milestone with a 720p projector at a price point of just $3299.

Toshiba will demonstrate the new TDPMT700 HD DLP featuring DLP HD2+technology.The new TDPMT700 ($3,499.99, available in March) also features a native 1280x720 resolution, but includes a six segment 5x Color Wheel, an HDMI(TM) input, and offers a 2000:1 contrast ratio.

Technically the Sharp below doesn't belong here, but with the two above, its price might make it here quite soon to stay competitive.

Sharp is also debuting the XV-Z2000 portable DLP projector with 720p resolution, a high contrast ratio of 2500:1 and a brightness level of 1200 ANSI lumens. The XV-Z2000 is available now for a MSRP of $4,499.99.

This info came from the CES press release by TI and should mark the beginning of affordable HD DLP projectors.

Someday maybe I'll actually WATCH my projector...

I bought my SHARP XV-Z2000 for less than the BenQ PE7700's MSRP about 3 weeks ago, so the street price should really be good!

So does it look like this is going to be a drop in price for existing technology or stripped down machines with a high resolution panel. It seems like the added benefit of moving from the $3500 toshiba 700 to the $9000 mt800 would only be worth it for a few people.

Any updates on TI pushing new DLP chips or dropping prices? Think the IF 7210 has HD3.

Good news indeed. This means I should be able to get an 720p DLP for under $2000 when it comes time to upgrade my 4805 in a few years. :)

But in my own way, I am King. Hail to the King, baby.

This is good news since my HT room in the basement will not be done until sometime in February.

And if Infocus announced a Darkchip 576p to compete with the NEC HT510 for about $2K, I'd be all over it.

Even if for a few hundred more you could have a 720P? Seems to me that 576P is now an odd choice given this news. Unless you have a lot of PAL dvd's. What's wrong w/my logic?

If it was only a few hundred I'd go with 720p, but right now it's the difference between $2K MSRP and $3.3K MSRP.

How would DLPs in this price range compare to the Sony HS51 LCD projector?

This is the million dollar question, as good as the hs51 is, it will be very interesting to see side by side comparison with these new dlp babies! What a great time to be in the market for a projector!!!

Since I got the HS51 I just dont find myself as excited about this as I would have been. I mean if Sony can get to plus or minus 4800:1 with LCD why cannot these guys get DLP to similar points. This is the key to a 3d picture for me.

I hope these new crop of dlp 720p-ers have atleast a 4X 6 segement color wheel. >4x would be a major plus.

If display sales are strong this Jan, this should help drive volume up and prices down by the 2006 CES.

Both the BenQ PE7700 and the Toshiba will have 6 segment CW.

As for CW speeds, I couldn't find a figure for the BenQ, but the Toshiba MT700 will definitely be 5x.

Typically power zoom, power focus, power shift or lens shift altogether and long throws.

try DROOL ;)

I'd like to see a couple of shots of these new PJs. Please help me out on the jargon... Darkchip 3 is HD3 or HD2+?

Here's the quick spec on the Toshiba
The new, affordable TDPMT700 features Texas Instruments' HD2+ DLP chip with 1280 x 720 pixels for true 720p High Definition images, a six segment 5x Color Wheel and Faroudja™ processing for high video quality reproduction. The MT700 offers a 2000:1 contrast ratio and 1000 ANSI Lumens brightness. The unit comes equipped with an HDMI™ Input, two Component Video Inputs, an RS-232 Control and a D-Sub 15 Input

BenQ PE7700:

It looks somewhat smaller than the PE8700.

it would be great to find out the lens geometry for these two (throw ratio and offset). that is the limiting factor for some of us and they often don't publish it until the product ships.

The MT700 has a throw ratio of 1.36:1 - 1.83:1 per one of the previous (and now closed) threads.

It does not bode well for the Matterhorn, but in reality the Matterhorn has not been heavily pushed in the US market. The CES in Vegas has traditionally been about products for release in the US. I suspect the Matterhorn will still be present for years to come in PAL countries.

I just bought a Matterhorn in September. Although I am excited by the new models announced they seem to be lacking in needed features. The reason I bought my Sharp DT-300 was for lens shift. If the lower end DLPs are equipped with lens shift then I will have a little buyer's remorse otherwise I am happy with my purchase.

The sudden drop in price though bodes well for the future HD-DLP projector market. The prices for the HD models have been absurdly and artificially high. An HD2+ does have about a 40% increase in resolution compared to a Matterhorn, but the price difference is more like a 150 to 200 percent.

Does anyone think that the $2k barrier for 720p DLP projectors could be broken by the end of the year?

Too soon to tell but I certainly hope so.
I believe that of all the brands that have broken the <$3.5k barrier only one has a 480P model, BenQ. Is that right? So if they are going to compete with the success of the Infocus 4805 then it's possible. It'll be fun to watch how this plays out, that's for sure.
