We have all seen many many owner reviews of the HD70, but I have yet to see one of the HD1000. I ordered mine the other day and will receive it on the 28th, but in the mean time I want to know other owners opinions on it so I can live vicariously through them until I get my own. Much appreciated.
I put mine up last nite, replaced my X1. Currently s-video thru Panny XP30, projecting on 4 ' by 8' plastex screen from approx 14'. I had to make another mount, I use plastic cutting board Vidsonix metal speaker mounts ( come 2 to package on Ebay under $20). Top of screen 12" from ceiling in dediated room with controled lighting.(almost same placement as X1) Out of box colors & image crisp very similar to Sharp XR10 but much better on standard Direct TV, DVDs super. In my darkened room on Cinema and low lamp it is perfect, for those concerned about too much brightness forget it! I'll run Getgray this afternoon and HCFR just to check. Again this is thru S-video so expect better from HDMI or component. I purchased thru PJ People and they were very helpful. My Universal MX500 remote learned the codes easily (remote very small). This would make a nice addition to anyones Home Theatre.
I got my hd1000 yesterday. All I can say is wow. I have seen a hd70 in store and my 1000 blows it out of the water and I don't even have my screen yet, I am just projecting onto a white wall, and it looks amazing. The gf says she can even tell a difference, (I was using a Viewsonic PJ551 i "borrowed" from work) I was up watching "test movies" and playing xbox360 and ps3 until 4 am last night!!! I didn't even do any calibration to it yet, straight out the box. As a side note, just to see what would happen, I did display my ps3 at 1080p thru the HDMI, so maybe it does accept it and down scale it. I got nervous and switched it back to the 720P..... Best HT money i have spend in a while. My price started with a 8. Cant wait for my carada sceen.

I have also received my hd1000u yesterday, ordered it from theprojectorplace on tuesday and received it on wednesday and I did not pay for overnight shipping, actually I didn't pay for shipping it was included in their special price(little under 900). The hd1000u is a great projector, my previous projector was a Optoma H31 great projector too, but the hd1000u is brighter( I can watch tv with lights on) and that is in low lamp mode and if you switch to high lamp mode (standand mode) and change gamma to sport it become very, very very bright(plasma like), less screen door, better colors( I can finally get red colors to look red and not orange), contrast was a little better on the H31 but not by much but you can calibrate the hd1000u to look almost as good as the H31 it must be the 1500 lumens on the mitsu, offset on the mitsu is 35% and it shows, I mounted the hd1000u in the same place as the H31 and the image was about a foot lower had to raise the projector to fit the screen but not problem for me as I have high ceiling it could be a problem for people with low ceiling. I am projecting the hd1000u to a Do-able 100 inch screen with very good results. Overall is a excellent projector I am very happy with my purchase.
I also got my HD1000U yesterday. My old projectors are a Panasonic AE500 and recently an Epson 400, both LCD type. The HD1000U is my first DLP projector. I was wary about possible rainbow affects that everyone is talking about for DLP projectors.
All I can say to who on the fence about purchasing this projector is: Run, don't walk! for under 1 grand, this is the deal of the century! it gives me such a WOW impression that I doubt myself to go back to LCD again.
Here are my impressions compared to the other two mentioned projectors I owned before. Keep in my this was of the box with no adjustments at all. These are general observations after watching 2 standard def DVD's and one HD-DVD. One SD DVD (Shadowless Sword) looked almost HD to my naked eyes with excellent blacks and shadow details.
Pros:
Brighter
Better contrast
Better black level
Quieter (in both low and standard lamp settings)
Sharper
No rainbow as far as I can detect
SDE is virtually non-existent about a few feet away
(flame suit on) I was surprised to find this low-cost projector made in Japan
Cons:
(Everyone already knows this) placement with no lens shift and large offset
I got intrigued by this projector when the price was 1.5K and decided to buy it and luckily when made the purchase when Mits lowered it down below 1K. Even if they didn't do that, I would be happy with it if I had to pay 1.5K for it! I'm returning the Epson 400 tomorrow.
I have a question for those that have it. How much is the offset? I have heard 35% and maybe there's a way to calculate the inches but not sure how that happens. I'm wondering how far below the lens is the top of the screen?
Don't forget that you do get some digital offset in the form of the 48 unused pixels due to the panel being 1280x768. I gather that gives you a couple extra inches top and bottom to play with.
I'm fairly certain that I'm buying the Mits1000U early in '07. This will be my setup:
Projector mounted on 9' ceiling.
Seating to screen distance: 11.5'
Screen 92 (16:9)
I have no flexibility with any of the above, other than going with a smaller screen size if necessary.
According to the screen/distance calculator, in order to have a 92 (16:9) screen I can mount the projector anywhere from 11' - 13' away. I hope I'm interpreting the calculator info correctly. I assume this means lens to screen distance, and using the zoom to fill the screen size accordingly.
Just a few questions:
1. Given my seating distance to screen, might a 92 screen be a bit too big, in which case I could get a smaller screen, say, 84. Most of the fixed screens in 16:9 format seem to be 92 and larger.
2. Would using the zoom to properly fill the screen degrade the picture in any way? BTW, I'm an OAR guy so I do understand OAR and would expect to see black bars top - bottom on widescreen or side to side on 4:3 movies.
Whatever you do, don't go with a smaller screen. I have your exact setup, 92" diagonal at about 11.5' away, 9' ceiling. It's a great setup. If anything, I'd like bigger.
I hope this doesn't violate forum rules, but we Canadians have fewer options. I was told by Mits Canada to contact their distributor, Precor Consumer Electronics, who directed me to Absolute Audio Video (in Calgary): absoluteaudio.ca.
I have yet to hear back, but perhaps you will have more luck than I. Let me know...
I would mount the projector in the middle of the throw range(12') for a little leeway.

I forgot to say on my original post, that the room is only 11'9" at it's longest, which means that the (ceiling mounted) Mits would be practically right up against the rear wall. If I'm understanding the projector calculator correctly, I'd have to go with a slightly under 92" (16:9) screen. Again, comments are welcome.
Im in a 10x12 room with a 92" screen, and its too small for me. It was huge at first, but you get used to it fast, and i know im a zoom lens away from 120-135". Go as big as possible!

Thanks, Blitz6speed. Just to be sure, are you saying I can go 92" or larger (16:9) with the Mits1000U in my 11'9" long room? Thanks.
