Without debating whether or not people think it is useful, can anyone confirm if this projector's HDMI port is version 1.3 compatible?

There was some talk (argument) of it a while back but I haven't seen anything definitive at this point. Clarification seems suspiciously missing in all the spec sheets I've seen, leading me to believe it is probably only 1.2... but again, I would like confirmation either way.

Another question... Evan didn't go over the specifics of iris modes in his review. Whoever gets their AW15 today, can you please give a run down of the various settings and how they affect picture quality and brightness? Thanks a bunch.

I am freaking out a little and I am not even the one getting the dang thing. I wanna hear impressions if it shows up. Freak OUT AHHHHH.

Just turned on my first projector on 17 Aug 2007 and I think I am hooked :).

Why does everyone that comes over ask how much it cost?

Interesting point. I hadn't even considered it might have less than 1.3. However, Sony's latest receiver w/HDMI is, in fact, only 1.2a (I believe,) and I also haven't seen a version number anywhere for this little jewel.

Also... you'd think they'd be shouting from the rooftops the "Deep Color" capability (though still "optional" with 1.3), if it had such.

He is driving us crazy on purpose I actually have it in my cart ready to purchase, but I would like to hear a few home reviews before I pull the trigger. I still got Z5 thoughts rolling around in my head.

BTW, has anyone seen the BenQ W500 Thread (Ignore the first half page of posts)? It is a just released 720p LCD, with 1080p/24 support and HQV processing... and it is selling for just cheaper than the Sony! The only thing I am really worried about is how the dynamic iris works. As far as I know, none of their other products use dynamic irises so it is probably a first-gen attempt... those tend to be more visible and less refined. While the Sony is on it's like 4th-gen iris and is reported to be almost undetectable.

We should all bombard Art at projector reviewers to get a W500 quick for comparison!

I'm waiting for reviews as well. In Canada, the W500 is, by far, the best deal for LCD projectors (720p) in terms of price AND features. When I learned of it, it jumped to the top my list (Z5 is now second--the AW15 has no Canadian release date or price yet, so it remains third--that's it. After that, it starts getting expensive (to me anyway). And I absolute need horizontal and (to a lesser degree) vertical lens shift, so DLPs (unless someone gives me one for free--then I might be willing to compromise on seat placement) are not in the running.

I thought this would be a replacement for my z2. I just looked at the specs and saw that the vertical lens shift is only .65 instead of 1 like hs60 and Zx series. I need that shift in my setup

Projector was looking perfect as my back yard choice until we hit brightness in the review... pity, price looks good.

The AW15 is on the Canada Sony Store web site for --- wait for it ---- 1699, compared to 1299 in the US store. Given a 94 cent dollar are we getting screwed or what??!

A small review on aw-15
the BLACK is excellent if i buy a 1080p down the road. if the black look this good i would be very happy. very good control Ambient lighting. i will put it this way u can watch with the light on. IMAGE QUALITY excellent- i was surprisingly shock at SDTV very smooth and HDTV crisp. better than my samsung 50inch dlp 720p. HD NET was very sharp ps3 and opp971 on standard dvd was very sharp. the color is very accuracy. my screen is 1.0 gain 100inch .pj 15ft back. my seating is 11ft back and u can see some SDE but no bad at all. if u back 12ft to 13ft u ok.SDE IS NOT A PROBLEM TO ME ON THIS PJ. i have not watch no HD-DVD OR BLU-
RAY MOVIES.

That's brand new as it wasn't there two days ago. And, yes, we are getting screwed. I've seen the Z5 and the W500 advertised in Canada for less than the average US street price--so not all companies "screw" Canada--but many of them do (Denon is the worst I know of in A/V--years ago, I was shopping for a hi-res audio universal and the two models I was considering were Marantz DV6400 and Denon DVD2900. In the US, the MSRP between the two was 300$ different (likely owing to the better video section in the Denon--which I could not profit from). In Canada, the Marantz MSRP was equivalent to the US one, after exchange. The Denon was, in Canada, not 300$ more, not even 500$ more--which would have been consistent with the exchange rate--but 1100$ MORE ). So one needs to be a savvy consumer in Canada.

I've been following this thread for a while and noticed this new article on S&V today. Thought some of you who are considering the Z5 vs. the AW15 might be interested.

Well, I would say this comparison was just a waste of bandwidth. Besides the fact that it wasn't really a "shootout" I cannot imagine that the color uniformity issue is a general issue to this extent with the AW15 but likely to be specific to his unit which might be faulty / out-of-specs.

If you want to create a serious review, with such an issue you have to contact Sony first, discuss it and get a replacement unit to find out if it is normal quality tolerance or a faulty device. Unless you do this, you issue a general statement about a whole series which is derived from that one model that has most likely a quality control issue, i.e. the review is worthless.

Check the review of an AW15 pre-production unit (mid April) on cine4home.de. They haven't seen any color uniformity issue.

According to the review On/off CR of 4k:1 is very respectable but some thing is fishy about its native. Previous HS51A/60 was tested to have 1800:1 and 11k:1 for native and on/off. The color space also can be corrected to the spec which he missed to do.
Gray scale tracking is awesome based on his calibration and 14.5 FTL in low lamp makes this projector a very bright PJ. SDE can be worked out by just defocus a bit. Sony's lens is extra sharp and it will not soften the picture. Ay 13' that I sit SDE is not an issue even without defocus but 11' that he tried ofcourse is an an issue with any 720p device. Overall I like this PJ as well.

It is all about quality...that is the picture

Hey Snoop. Did you go to the Starpower in Southlake? The Sony in their meeting room seemed blurry and lacked picture definition in HD mode. Does the AW15 look better?

You should get about 15 FTL with your set up. SDE should not be visible at about 10' either.

How could this pj be dark onto a 70" screen is beyond me!!
