It's just the way you take pictures that makes a difference, the best way is to use a tripod and a good camera that is at least 5 megapixel so it will look best with the lights off.

Here are some shots of my Mitsu 1500 at about 120". It's just projecting on to a khaki-ish wall at the moment because I chose to add a PS3 to compliment my A2 instead of a screen since it looks pretty good on the wall. These are all BD shots since I had the PS3 on when I decided to take some pics. I'll add HDDVD shots later.
These are all "as-shot" by my Fuji SLR. I simply took the RAWs, cropped to just the screen, and then dropped the width to 800 pixels. No color correction, sharpness, etc was applied. I do apologize for the funky shape of the screen. It's the result of the only location I could put my tripod and the tripod's shortness relative to the screen. There's no way I trusted myself to hold the camera dead still (which you would have to to see the detail) for 30secs!

Spidey3

The Rock

I love that shot, looks so "detailey"!

I was just thinking, while you guys are looking at those shots, see anything wrong with the pictures (inaccurate colors, bad black levels, etc)? I just did a quick (see: 15mins) calibration using the Sony 7669 thing on the Superbad disc.

It is not a movie, I found on the Internet and reduce the size to 1280x720 pixels and open in Media Player Classic without zoom (100%).

COD4 followed by Gears of War

Games are more difficult to photograph especially GOW since the characters are always swaying around. I went a little darker than what I'm seeing on my screen just to be able to capture something as sharp as I could. With movies I can pause, make long exposures and correct the exposures to try to get a photo as close to what I'm seeing as possible, games I just can't get that close to what I'm seeing. These aren't bad though, just a tad darker and less sharp than they really should be.

Hey willagaroon:

what are your display settings on the 1080? I am about to buy one and I understand that they are not the best out of box. I just wanted to have somewhere to start when trying to set it up.
