I'll most likely be ordering a HTPC case from Newegg soon, and I would like to throw in a cheap sound card. I really only need analog stereo output, and SPDIF passthrough. Since I have a surround decoder, I usually pass Dolby 5.1 directly over SPDIF when I want surround. And it needs to work with Ubuntu. Any ideas on a good cheap linuxy soundcard?
My motherboard has SPDIF actually, but I can't get it to work, nor could I get the analog output to work. I put in a cheap, random sound card and now I can get the analog stereo to work, but not digital. This is all very annoying and I blame it entirely on pulseaudio and Ubuntu's implementation thereof.
Lucid Puppy is built from Ubuntu 10.04 (sources I presume), but bears no visual or functional resemblance. No Pulseaudio in any Puppy version, only bare metal ALSA, perfect for testing/diagnosing audio hardware-
