Wow. What a nightmare. Trying to get NVIDIA drivers installed in Ubuntu 10.04. Is there a good comprehensive set of instructions anywhere on how to do this ... one that does not assume that you know how to stop x-windows? Or even log in as root. Seriously. I can't even tell if its possible to log in as root. Half the Google results say you can't.

I want to make this work, but why in god's name can't this be a wee bit easier?

Have you tried installing the NVIDIA drivers from the "hardware drivers" panel in the 'administration' drop down menu?

Yes, it says there are no proprietary drivers available.

what GPU are you using? I have an older GeForce 8200 GPU and it found the drivers just fine.

I should have pointed you here first. Try the howto in the first post of this thread:

You can probably skip all the VDPAU stuff.
Good luck.

You're welcome. The other thing you could try (and this might be easier) is adding the NVIDIA PPA and then installing the proprietary drivers from there.
See:

I am not sure if the PPA is still up to date.
