Last night I installed ffmpeg from a GIT pull (SVN is no longer used). I still don't see anything in ffplay that suggests bitstreaming audio.
Code:
$ ffplay -bsfs
ffplay version N-31097-ga099183, Copyright (c) 2003-2011 the FFmpeg developers
  built on Jun 30 2011 18:44:27 with gcc 4.4.3
  configuration: --enable-bzlib --enable-libdc1394 --enable-libdirac --enable-libfaac
--enable-libgsm --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libopenjpeg --enable-libschroedinger
--enable-libspeex --enable-libtheora --enable-libvorbis --enable-libx264 --enable-libxvid
--enable-zlib --enable-gpl --enable-nonfree --enable-version3
  libavutil 51. 11. 0 / 51. 11. 0
  libavcodec 53. 7. 0 / 53. 7. 0
  libavformat 53. 4. 0 / 53. 4. 0

I don't know about ffmpeg, but it looks like you can do audio bistreaming via aplay.

It looks like you need a 2.6.36 kernel, or to patch the one you have.

For ffmpeg, you may have to patch that:

I may have found something HERE:

Hi all!

Here is a patchset implementing TrueHD, DTS-HD, and E-AC3 support in our
IEC 61937 muxer, allowing HDMI passthrough of those formats. The E-AC3
and TrueHD ones are partially based on the earlier work of Carl Eugen
Hoyos and myself, while I only just got DTS-HD working.

I don't see that muxer listed as a configure option in my latest ffmpeg source:
Code:
~/ffmpeg$ ./configure --list-muxers

Maybe it still needs to be patched first.
