IMO the best way to install NVidia drivers is via the x-swat PPA:

Code:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current libvdpau1

Why's that? I mean, why is it better than via ubuntu's system prefs?

The main reason I use x-swat is because they are the latest stable nvidia drivers.

Also if you use DKMS, then you don't have worry about kernel updates messing up the drivers.

Thanks all! I ended up with a 430 card and all works great! I still am finding myself using Windows7 often because I can't figure out how to get HD Audio on Linux yet. The AudioEngine branch of xbmc isn't working that well.

However, I plan on tinkering with it next weekend (we just moved so I haven't done much lately).

Are there any universal remote controls that will work to control xbmc or Windows Media Player via my HPTC? What do I need to control xbmc, WMP or another media library via a remote? (preferably if the method works with both linux or Win7)

Thanks!

Any of those USB Windows Media Center infrared receivers work with Linux. They usually come with a remote as well. Usual cost for receiver and remote bundle is around $30. Personally, I prefer the Logitech Harmony remotes. I have two of them. They are universal remotes, and work with the WMC IR receivers.

+1. I have WMC IR receivers for all my machines using LIRC and Harmony remotes for use with them. The WMC IR receivers work out of the box with all distros I've used over the last few years.
