Here is what I currently have. A Pio Blu ray, Xbox 360 with live, FIOS DVR and a reciever that can access my home network for songs. I also have a rack of old DVD's that I need to do something with. I have thought about an HTPC the biggest reason would be for those awesome XBMC skins and to rip those DVDs but beyond that I'm not sure that I need an HTPC.

The questions is, is the HTPC the only way I can accomplish the XBMC skin and the DVD rips. Could I accomplish this say with a lap top and say a WD exteranal hard drive and my XBOX 360.

Well, someday you'll be watching TV on a computer. Some of us are doing this now. I use MythTV to record all my TV shows like a DVR, and skip all the commercials. That's what an HTPC is for. When I watch Whale Wars on my twelve foot screen, it's better than the movies because it's clearer and I have full control.
