Ubuntu 12.04, StreamZap remote. I have lirc installed, and it can see buttons being pushed. I went to VLC, Tools, Preferences, Show settings:All, Interface, Control interfaces an selected "Infrared remote control interface", then under Infrared pointed it at ~/.lircrc I've tried a few different recipes I found by Googling, but VLC never blinks. I also found some references to starting VLC with a command-line argument to support remotes, but A) wouldn't setting this in preferences do that? and B) I can't find a single "do it this way"... everyone seems to have a different idea about how this should work, and all of the "solutions" seem to be highly qualified (this worked for me, I don't know why it doesn't work for you) or speculative (I haven't done this myself, but this SHOULD work!)

So... how do I get VLC to see my remote? Nothing fancy, I'll be happy with play and pause if nothing else!

You may be fighting against the in-kernel module (driver). The newer kernels have a built-in driver that sees the more common remotes as a keyboard. Read through this thread,for some insight on what I mean. Take quantumstate's posts with a grain of salt. He sometimes lets his intelligence get in the way.

It has been quite some time since I used VLC with a remote, but I do remember I used to have:

Code:
control=lirc

inside my ~/.config/vlc/vlcrc file. You might try that.

From what I gather, if that was the case irw would never pick up any events, as they'd be intercepted before they got to lirc. That isn't the case with me... every keypress results in an event in irw I think I need the correct map for those events to what VLC expects.

What happens when you open VLC and go, Tools > Preferences > Hotkeys, double click on a Hot Key you want to change?

If it doesn't register in the VLC menu can you open a terminal window and see if anything is being registered there.
