I am trying to gather information on which video capture cards have linux
drivers. I am especially interested in those cards which have hardware
MPEG2 encoders and provide linux support.

I've gotten Linux to recognize my Video input card, the Pinnacle Studio Pro as a Brooktree Bt878, so if you can find any card with this chipset I believe it will work.

For analog, you might want to checkout http://www.linuxmedialabs.com/.

I work exclusively with Firewire, where we can capture DV, uncompressed, and MPEG2-TS:

LinuxTV advertises support for a hardware MPEG2 encoder board, but I think it's quite expensive.
pvr.sourceforge.net seems to be dormant. It's an effort to build a driver for the Hauppauge WinTV PCI PVR. Maybe some hacker gurus can aid in the effort and revive this.

Any of the brooktree 8x8 cards should have some level of support. I used a Pinnacle Studio PCTV with an 848 and it was supported by XAWtv and V4L, although I haven't used it in ages.

Check out gatos.sourceforge.net for info on the status of support for the ATI All-In-Wonder cards. I think some of them are getting there.
