Im using 2 Lumis units atm

1st unit... CR=28k with 1900 D65 lumen.

2nd unit...CR=30k with 1800 D65 lumen.

with the new coatings, ANSI is consistently over 1000.

There are more than a handful of [op amps] that sound so good that most designers want to be using them as opposed to discreet transistors. Dave Reich, Theta 2009

Your dealer is best source for the firmware to insure it's the latest. They should be able to provide install instructions as well. If that's not possible for some reason, PM me an email address and I'll send the latest and a link to a video created by Sim2 on how to update the Lumis.

Yeah, what's the ansi contrast on the Infinitec filter, either one in the Lumis or the new one Infinitec showed this week?

Apologies for asking again, but does anyone know if upgrading the firmware from the earliest version can actually improve the video processing/image as claimed by the above poster hhelmut? I'm considering risking my first firmware update before the big game gathering we're hosting Sunday and don't want to risk possible glitches/changes to settings etc. unless there's a possible picture improvement payoff. TIA

I probably couldn't touch a SIM2 Lumis legally, but I wanted to ask, has anyone ever tried to fire it up with a really big screen, like a 25 foot wide 2.35:1 screen (with an A-lens like an ISCO III)?

+1 w/ Health Nut.

You would need 3-4 Lumis's! That's about 250 sq ft of screen. My Lumis barely lights up my 14' wide screen (84 sq ft) to an acceptable level. I too have a 2.35 screen with ISCO lens.

You need a light canon for that size screen. That's Titan Reference or Barco territory.

You'd also need a near commercial theater sized theater. What size screen are most movie theaters these days?

Thanks Lon, against the laws of the universe, I tried it with my kids Windows 7 machine and couldn't get it to update before anyways. Will try on my XP machine when I get time again.

I can see this. This question is off topic, but my dad and I were wanting to make at outdoor theater since I am at college, and he is insisting we should be fine using our projector (Infocus x10), and make a 20 foot wide scope screen (with our DIY lens). I was curious because I know the Lumis is a light canon, but my infocus is one of the brighter home theater projectors. I want to get the viewsonic pro8200 for outdoor movies though. I use my projector on a 12 foot wide 2.35:1 screen.

SIM2 has PRO versions of their 3-chip projectors -- PRO C3 and PRO C4. The are said to output over 4000ANSI. If you don't have a problem with 3-chip 720p, you could probably pick up a PRO C3 on the cheap. These would have less difficulty lighting up a screen this size.

Was wondering if I could take an owners opinion survey, and see what folks are using for surge/filtering on their Lumis projectors. I've been using a Panamax duplex plugin surge protector since my first Sim2 pro, the SVD 500 then the SVD800 then the HT3000e then the C3X1080 and now the Lumis. I was wondering if the Panamax (I was perfectly happy with) was perhaps a bit dated and swapped it out for a Transparent Powerbank2, another duplex wall plugin I had lying around from my Charlie Sheen like audiophool daze. It seemed to me that on the Lumis the pic lost a little punch and lost color saturation a tad. Interestingly, this is what their cables do to sonics as well. I'm now wondering if it's ok to go a naturel without a surge protector or if that's considered a no-no or if an old(er) surge protector is perfectly cool. Are there particular units owners have found work well and are happy with?

On another note, Jeff Meier (umr here on the forum) stopped by again to calibrate the new bulb and huge props for the man once more. Watched the Avatar BD last night and it just knocked me out on the Lumis. Who the hell needs 3D with the ANSI coming out of this machine! No glasses necessary. What an experience

I Just confirmed that SIM is offering a pre-order special on 3D upgrades...50% off this month. Apparently they replace a few boards and install an HDMI 4 jack pack and ship it back with 4 sets of active glasses. A regular Lumis thus transforms into a Solo. I don't own a Lumis (though I'd love to), but if I did it would be tempting...if for no other reason than the resale value would probably improve. I'm told, however, that the modification can't be done to a HOST. I wonder why? Oh well, I own a MICO so there's no 3D in my immediate future.

I just spoke with Sim2 and confirmed that the program that was available for upgrades (which I posted on several months ago) did in fact expire as planned back in December. Only those people that took advantage of the promo before December 31, 2010 are eligible for the future upgrade (as we all know and expected). The info on only being for single box Lumis only, not the HOST, is also still correct, as previously posted.

Ther is no new promo.

Jim

Jim,
I think that deal in December was for people who purchased a new Lumis that month. As I understand it, this month they are offering the upgrade at 50% off to those who already own a Lumis (not HOST) or the UNO.

My apologies to Pete, he is correct!!

I bypassed the other folks and went to the marketing guy at Sim2 and indeed the promo described by Pete is correct (50% off 3D upgrade until the end of March). Info is just now being released.

Incredible that given the size of the Florida operation, and number of people there, that one person no more than 50 feet away from another would not have this info, and they process the orders!!!

Did notice that a little Jeff, but bet it's a lot more pronounced on your 14ft screen than my 10.5 footer.

Took advantage of some Best Buy points I had been stacking up and ended up picking up almost 2 dozen BD's this week. Even though it was a dupe that I already had on HDDVD, I ended up getting King Kong and it is another movie that really shows off the Lumis' capabilities. Some scenes are just a torture test for contrast and in fact I'd say it's the first BD that I've seen that might actually exceed the HDDVD version. I'd strongly suggest that other Lumis owners check it out. Apocalypse Now Redux is another fave that just leapt off the screen as well. Hadn't seen this version even though it's one of my favorite movies and was seriously blown away at seeing it for the first time in HD (although there are a few very blurry scenes -- not sure why).

In many, many years of scouring the high end of audio and video I'm astounded at this projector's ability to continuously and pleasantly surprise me with it's capabilities. I cannot recall another piece of audio or video gear other than perhaps the Lamm ML2 amplifiers that have this ability that can only demonstrate itself over time, once the new product glow has worn off to achieve this effect of continuously exceeding expectations. It's very rare in a piece of CE (for me at least) to not become bored or find flaws in some aspect of its reproduction.

I recently noticed the DI pumping a little again while watching Black Swan ( great film by the way ), so I switched it off, then on again. Worked like a charm - pumping gone. Great tip to write down in your owners manual should the need arise !

I just got my 3D Solo! So far I like it a lot -- just watched the NBA Finals game last night on ESPN 3D. I did have one question, though. Obviously the big feature on this projector is "triple flash", but I couldn't find any way to see if/when it was actually doing triple flash.

When you are watching in 3D, it's doing it.

Is that really true? For example, when I am watching ESPN 3D, which is broadcast at 1080i/60, is that true?
