The shutter size is fine, they just need to block the view under, over and to the side of the shutters, and block off reflections onto the viewed side of the shutterglasses from the back and the sides. Classic torchwelding style glasses would work, I guess. Hey if you need to wear silly glasses, anyway...

Very classic looking but not the cast aluminium of yesteryear:

I am sure these could also be made in shocking pink;-)

Or do something like the manufacturer did on the side of these, all around the smaller shutterglasses, to keep them less expensive but close them off in a somewhat more stylish fashion.

OK, my Directv HR21 was updated for 3D, I tuned to channel 106 (3D Channel) and connected the HR21 directly into the DPI 3D main input (Input 8), enabled 3D on and I have message from Directv that my projector is not 3D ready. Is this because the DPI does not yet do side by side?

That is correct. But i am starting to think Directv will not work after the upgrade with the new 3D formats because Directv has now said they will only work with select TV models. They will add more in the future but as of right now they will only support the new Panasonic and Samsung models. I guess this is determined thru some sort of EDID info. When Comcast broadcasted the Masters it did not matter what display you had because you had to manually turn on 3D from the tv menu. Directv is automated so it will communicate with the tv. Hopefully they will open this up to all displays soon. I guess that is why Directv did a firmware update and Comcast did not.

Also I believe you will use input 3 for 3D from cable or sat... not the input 8. Because those sources don't need the extra bandwidth.

Man. That REALLY sucks. Good luck trying to deal with direct TV telling them what is needed and why. Try finding anybody to talk to about it intelligently. Even the advanced tech people who can solve operational problems that stump most of the Direct TV people are still very lacky level. This will have to be addressed the the projector manufacturers. My guess is that unlike consumers they will be able to reach the right folks and arrange for compatabilty with their machines. Seriously, I feel for the frustration you guys must now feel. Its not fair and I mean it.

Beginning in June 2010, DIRECTV will be the first to launch 3D channels. With the right equipment, all DIRECTV HD customers will be able to experience this new frontier in television entertainment at no extra charge. The required equipment includes a 3D television and 3D glasses. Although other 3D TVs are available, we strongly recommend you purchase one of three compatible 3D TV models listed below to allow for a seamless 3D integration experience.

Panasonic (Model TC-P50VT25, TC-P54VT25, TC-P58VT25, and TC-P65VT25 )
Samsung (Model LN55C750R2F, LN46C750R2F, UN55C9000ZF, UN46C8000XF, UN46C9000ZF, UN55C8000XF, UN55C7000WF, UN46C7000WF, UN40C7000WF, PN50C7000YF, PN58C7000YF, PN63C7000YF, PN50C8000YF, PN58C8000YF, PN63C8000YF)
Mitsubishi (TV Model WD-60737 with Dongle Model 3DC-100)
Current HDMI cables are 3D compatiable. The HDMI cable must be connected directly between the DIRECTV receiver and the 3D TV.

*Supported 3D televisions may also need a firmware upgrade. Please check with your television manufacturer to ensure you have the latest firmware version for your 3D-HD television model.

If they can make things more difficult they will...

Hopefully when they say strongly suggest, that doesn't mean required. Maybe we can use our projector and we just manually have to turn on 3D? IDK.. but based on how much difficulty people are having getting a receiver that is 3D compatible, we will probably never get any support for this.

Mark H hit the nail on the head this is something that DPI would need to work out with Directv if there is a problem, the end user stands no chance sorting this out if there are issues.

I am pretty sure DPI will check out the side by side with Directv before release

Since Peter lives very close to Joe`s in Miami, why would he want to try the Vegas branch? Correct advice though. Lon. Are you going to be able to make the big boys reunion at Cedia this year?

Ok Dpi had a terrific 3D presentation with the Titan and the ubiquitous xpand glasses. I could not believe this is the same projector from last year. Quite brite and with the 5k contrast the image was smooth and clear. A joy to behold.

Met with GW and indeed He confirmed that the directv EDID thing may not be as strict as it may first appeAr.

Dpi has produced a Disney bluray for demo.

If you want DirecTv3d and bd 3d the titan is the ticket. These developments significantly have increased the value of lon's Pj. Who knew? Definetely worth the tinkering incurred.:-)

So was this the best 3d at the show?

There was a 3d alley from the big boys dci projectors, even though this was not a Dci show. There was a stock Barco dp-2000 with built in Dolby wheel. The image very good but as wolfgang said, the glasses have internal reflections, so the dpi bd3d beat this dci 3d.

I looked at the Christie from a distance an it looked ok with reald.

The nec 1600 with the harkness hall non perfed silver screen with a very compact z screen adapter was best in show, the u2 video and the dci clips were perfect.

This supports what wolfgang said about the z screen method.

We are working with doremi to bring directv and frame packing to the Integrated media board ahead of schedule but at a 20k premium.

They all had their moments of glory and times where you thought our eyeballs were out of position .

I agree that they had the best demo material, very large display and least artifacts. I still thought I needed muscles to move my eyeballs left and right though to avoid 3-D artifacts . But less of others and certainly more moments of greatness.

BTW, all 3-D sports samples I watched were horrible. Really horrible. I have yet to see sport footage that comes remotely close the fidelity of movies.

Peter,

Thanks for all the great feedback. I am glad DP has worked hard to get these new 3D formats available to customers as quickly as they have. They have come a long way since March when no one really had any answers at all.

Im am so excited for the upgrade. I just wish it was available tomorrow for the ESPN 3D launch.

Let`s talk about 3D sports. There will be no in your face effects and no fake mid 3D fake depth. I have said this before. live 3d and no artificial affects. Two camera lens placed about the same distance apart as your eyes. the only 3d will be what`s close to the lenses just like when you view a scene withyour eyes. the stuff in the foreground has 3D depth. As the distance increases, the scene becomes two dimensional. So for sports towork, the cameras will have to be close to the action. a camera at mid foot ball field high up in the stands will give a 2D image of the action on the field, just like if you were there and viewing it with your eyes. but nake the caera right above the action hanging from the movable cable, and bingo it will look 3D.

To be clear, my comment wasn't about 3-D effect but really degraded video quality. As you say, with 3-D effect not really there most of the time, I think this is a poor bargain.

Amir,

I am glad our eyeballs were semicalibrated This time.

I did go back to see the cinealta dual lens masters and the presentation was very solid and without motion bugs ( the Sony system is more like a dual projector setup in that regard), the video of the faces was kind of dark, the Korean and the other white guys got confused for tiger woods, maybe it's a lcos color anomaly or a gamma thing but the colors seemed crushed. That being said the edges were sharp and the 3-d effect lovely.
