I have never seen anyone post about this processor in this forum, and it seems to have many qualities I have been looking for but have not found. Anyone have any experience with them? The company seems to be grounded in good science practices, and the price for the A20 seems reasonable. Any thoughts on this processor or company?

Thanks

Engineered to deliver
precise reproduction of both analog
and digital sources, the AP20 leverages the power of 6 Analog
Devices 400MHz DSPs. The AP20 offers 16 channels of digital
and 8 channels of analog inputs coupled to the 16 digital and 16
analog outputs. In addition to 1 S/PDIF and 2 TOSLINK inputs,
the AP20 features 4 HDMI 1.3b inputs with Blu-Ray HD decoding
and active loudspeaker crossovers.

Each of the 16 channels Include
• 31 bands of 3rd octave equalization
• 3 bands of parametric equalization
• Channel gain & phase inversion control
• Individual Bass & Treble controls
• Variable delay line adjustable from 0ms to 1000ms
One of the Most Compelling Features
of the AP20 is the
inclusion of Dirac Live® room optimization technology. Dirac
Live® is a state-of-the-art digital room correction technology
that improves the listener experience by correcting for room
modes and anomalies using high-resolution filter technology.

I agree that this appears to be aimed more at the professional market. The spec sheet notably mentions Dolby AC3 (i.e. Dolby Digital), but not Dobly Digital+ nor Dolby TrueHD. (It does do DTS Master Audio.) Depending on your beliefs about player vs. SSP decoding, this may (or may not) be important to you.

The product is made by Datasat, the folks who bought DTS's digital cinema business. They say it is usable in cinemas or high end home theaters.

I spent some time with them at CEDIA last year and I thought they had some great technology. If they are there later this month, mebbe there will be more news.

I think it is available for home use, and if I remember correctly MSRP is around $6K.

Hi Kal,

That would be great to read about.

Mark Seaton,

If you are around, I noticed on your website you mentioned the company and the A20 a couple of yrs ago. Did you ever get a chance to experiment with it? If yes, what was your take?

Thanks

Hi Raul,

I have kept an eye on the product as I see some interesting potential, but I haven't had any time to dig deeper into it at this time. Last year it seemed as if it was a bit raw, with lots of potential. I hope to poke around it more this year.

I am on it as of next week.

Had enough with the T__t, still need digital mch out. Don't want to risk sending 12 channels of signal on analog xlr 35 feet and then get noise, there could always be noise with analog, but if you choose a high quality dac right next to the amps like this:

The Prism Sound Dream ADA-8XR converter provides eight channels of high-quality 24-bit, 192kHz A/D AND D/A conversion, allied with a wealth of sophisticated features for the most exacting applications in sound recording, mastering and broadcast. The Prism Sound ADA-8XR is ideal for location recording, stereo and surround mixing, mastering and monitoring, or as a flexible companion for your DAW or MDM. The ADA-8XR takes the philosophy of the widely-acclaimed Prism Sound converter range a stage further: For the first time, the same goals of ultimate sound quality and versatility have been realised in a multi-channel, 192kHz-capable format. Eight channels of high-quality 24-bit, 192kHz, A/D AND D/A conversion (or 16 channels of A/D or D/A) Flexible digital interfacing options: AES3 - 2-speed or 2-wire, also handles S/PDIF FireWire - for direct connection to DAW software on PC or Mac Pro Tools|HD - direct connection of up to 32 inputs and outputs per card Pro Tools|24 MIX - direct connection in place of 888|IO DSD - for SACD production, with SDIF2/3 and optional MAC-DSD (Cat5) interface; also allows sample-rate-conversion between any PCM rates Built-in Prism Sound 'SNS' noise-shapers for ultimate 16-bit and 20-bit reductions Built-in Prism Sound 'MR-X' word-mapping for lossless recording up to 24-bit, 96kHz on standard DA-88 or ADAT MDMs, or other 16 or 20-bit media Built-in Prism Sound 'DRE' function gives 24-bit performance on 16-bit media WITHOUT sacrificing tracks Stereo monitor, with headphones and analogue AND digital line outputs, can monitor any input or output pair, or a panned stereo mix of all eight channels Electronically balanced, transformerless, galvanically isolated XLR analogue inputs and outputs ensure freedom from noise pick-up and crosstalk, with software-controlled balance and line-up Ultimate Prism Sound clock-stability and jitter-rejection for crystal-clear imaging, with independent multiple PLLs for A/D and D/A paths Prism Sound 'Over-killer' selectable on analogue inputs: the best-sounding gentle limiting for louder masters - with no 'overs' Intuitive user interface, provides fast access to all I/O and processing functions; with continuous display of all settings Versatile eight-channel LED bargraph / status monitor can access all points in A/D or D/A signal paths Expandable DSP 'processing' module in each path All signal processing functions can be also be carried out in 'D-D' mode, including conversion between different interface formats Modular construction allows upgrading of all input and output cards (INCLUDING A/D, D/A, and DSP boards); no need to worry about future converter advances or new interface standards Internet-upgradeable software - loads from your PC or Mac into 'flash' memory inside the ADA-8XR

I look forward to reading your impressions on it Peter. There are some very intriguing options out there that seem to get very little attention in the consumer side of audio.

We had the head engineer at Datasat provide us actual measured specifications.

Here is what they reported:

Digital Out
Analog Out

Frequency Range: 20Hz - 20 kHz
+/- .03dB
+/- .09dB

Total Band width 10Hz -40kHz
+/- .03dB
+/- .09dB

THD+N 1kHz
Less than 0.0006%
Less than 0.001%

S/N Ratio
>122dB
>103dB

Channel Separation
>122dB
>83dB

Some of those are superb, any comments?

It is going to take time to master this, the chassis is not built like the Krell BUT the touchscreen has written "designed by DTS" all over it.

I just got off the phone with th head of digital cinema at Meyers Laboratory, he confirmed that the AP-20 is a fantastic surround processor with beyond imaginable sound quality. They are playing with the Dirac and are very pleased with the whole thing!

Case appears closed, it appears it is the new King.

Mike it looks good , and it fits the bill, is it standalone or do you need it online with pro tools? Also remains if Nicksbass will accept it's specs, he is the stickler for that.

Hi Peter

I had decided on ADA MACH IV. But this looks promising esp with built in room correction and digital outs.
I have 6-8 weks to place an order . How do youi control AP20 -does it come with a remote? Can it be integrated into home automation- I will be using Control4?
FRom menu screen it looks like 5.1 only. I will be using 7.2 setup?
Is there a place to download user manual?

Thanks
Mani

Mani hello,

I have the ip control protocol for it. You may manipulate the output channels, but yes it takes 8 channel (7.1) native from hdmi just use the 8 channel profile, you can also split a channel into 2 new ones with high pass and low pass up to 16.

manual is here:

Here is the Halo Metric LIO 8 $4.5k

You could have 16 channels of this for 9k but the 16 channel version of prism is 11,500 so it averages out.
