Turns out that Trinnov s/w insists that the sub be assigned to the highest number channel, so you'll have to adjust your speaker routing to match.

It is complete mess. I changed the mapping in Jriver and get the channel assignments right without applying a filter, but then when I use on of the filters they are mixed up again. I'm going to need help from Dirac to get this sorted out.

Just heard back from Dirac. Channel mapping in Jriver and Dirac are the same. Why mine gets screwed up is a mystery they cannot explain nor resolve. I hate HTPCs with a passion, but am so far into this now, I'll see this one through to the bitter end.

The technology which was tentatively named Unity has been finally trademarked as Dirac Unison.
It is not a product as of now, the tuning is really complex to release to the public so if/when we make it a product it will probably be for manufacturers, installers and pro markets only for very high-end systems.

Things are easier in a fixed environment (a predefined car model with unlimited available measurements, i.e. 900 as you will see) so the first licensee to use Dirac Unison is the Volvo Car Group making the technology available in the all-new Volvo XC90 with a Bowers & Wilkins audio system.
The announcement is here: http://www.dirac.se/en/news-events/latest-news/introducing-dirac-unison%E2%84%A2,-an-entirely-new-approach-to-sound-optimization.aspx

I can add the following from Michael Adenauer, former music producer and audio expert at Volvo Cars:

In the new XC90, the software has been used to re-create the exact acoustic qualities of Gothenburg Concert Hall, located in Volvo’s home town and home to the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Sweden. A simple change in the centre touch screen that controls all the car’s features and the system will immediately alter its settings to mirror this concert hall, a recording studio or a stage.

“It took some 800 individual measurements in the Gothenburg Concert Hall before we captured the true richness of the acoustics,” said Mr Adenauer. “When it comes to the Studio Mode, it offers a precise and dry listening environment, similar to that which a recording engineer experiences in a studio. The Individual Stage mode offers the opportunity to control your position in a virtual venue through the innovative use of two sliders called ‘envelope’ and ‘intensity’. With these sliders you can move close to the stage, be surrounded by the musicians or place yourself out in the audience.”

Among the innovations in the new XC90 are the world’s first sub-woofer to be integrated into the body of the car rather than being a freestanding box that is simply bolted to it. Furthermore, this sub-woofer is also air ventilated – another world first – which means the air is expelled from an opening near the rear wheel-arch.
“The sub-woofer design is integrated in our new Scalable Product Architecture and is a world first in the automotive industry,” said Mr Adenauer. “This increases the subwoofer’s capacity to pulse more air, which enables extremely low bass tones all the way down to 20 Hz. In principle it turns the whole interior space in the car into a giant subwoofer.”

Ciao, Flavio

I really hope you guys and miniDSP can get this technology into a shipping product for hobbyists. How wonderful would be be to be able to have smooth modal room reproduction without multiple subwoofers in addition to between 5 and way more than that main channels!

I wonder if they got the idea from reading my old forum posts about using the frame rails of my Citroën DS as cabinets for two front-mounted 12" woofers ca 1999.

what about the concept that EQ is not very helpful at frequencies above around 200hz? Is the application of a rolloff the principal benefit of dirac at those frequencies or does it literally attempt to eq the entire spectrum?

On my audyssey setup I did audyssey on the surrounds but setup the mains to bypass audyssey. I still get the crossover function of the receiver when I do this. I also have a PEQ that takes care of my subs no matter what, which I don't have to ever mess with in the receiver/processor.

Sorry for the bump on this, but I'm interested in purchasing the Dirac software and hardware to get this to work, and I have a few questions.

How would one measure the raw unaltered response using REW at one location, and then compare the results to Dirac using all 9 positions? Can one use a single position so that it's apples to apples?

I would like to know how best to show before and after results but I'm not sure how if the Dirac software averages over 9 positions, so I don't know how accurate the relative changes will be compared to using REW, measured over a single position.

Advice would be appreciated.

Sweet so we will never see this in a Denon, Marantz, Onkyo or any down to earth AVR

Too bad I would never buy a Volvo even with the best sound system
