I thought I read it only costs $55,000 and it's 4k and was wondering why no one was talking about it. Also it says it has 2 hdmi inputs. Do you guys get 3d blu ray on these types of projectors? Anyone seen these in theaters? How do they stack up against the barcos? Could it really be 8000:1?

Maybe this should be in the d cinema section

I just want to let you know that at this moment ( waiting for upgrade) it doent accept 4k files (hdmi)
It needs a metalic screen and you have to buy a second lens if you want to get 3d

Im not familiar with 3d on dci machines but I thought I read some guy on avs forum got active 3d on his 4k barco with work arounds you cant do that on here and I'm assuming a 4k workaround maybe too?

Also weren't pretty much all 4k dci machines like 200k up until this point?

Thinking it's almost the same price as a sim 2 lumis 3d solo you'd almost imagine people trying this route considering it can get up to 15000 lumens.

Plus I think Sony is pretty conservative with their contrast specs on their pro projectors so it looks like 8000:1 might be plausable.


I wish I knew if any cinemas had one of these in my area as I think it'd be fun to see one in action.

Not sure of your location, but I know that the new Alamo Drafthouse in Houston is running several of these machines.

Im in the minneapolis area dang but i dont know if anyone will have any i think most theaters upgraded before this projector came out like amc and mann theater but maybe someone has one like an independent theater.


4k 15,000 lumens for 55,000 is really a huge price difference than what has been around right?

Werent 4k projectors like 150,000 or more up until this point?

How do you switch between 2D and 3D? Is it a manual lens change or is their an automated slide?

Any reviews on this... the price is right for sure with that high of lumens!

There was a guy on film tech forum saying they get far over 14 fl on a 9.2 meter screen with a 1.6 gain using only 2 450 watt lamps and dci corrected and these use up to 6 lamps he also noted the solid blacks and amazing picture. Are they underestimating the lumen output? Figuring quad 465 lamp units from digital projection can get 20,000 lumens you'd think 15,000 doesn't seem right but who knows.

in the last 30 years some company’s try to make a screen that can work for both 2d and 3d with polarizer.

i doubt that now someone found something that in 30 years no one found.

i expect some kind of problems here and there.
it will be a compromise.

the sony 515 is a nice 4k pr. and it have a good on off cr.
i saw this pr. some time ago and motion looks very nice cr. looks very nice.

i hear that the 515 "may get soon" a passive 3d system like Infitec or dolby.

till today the hdmi can not take 4k native in 24p or 3840x2160 at 30p.

may this pr. is a option for me for 2d in 4k but i will not buy it on till i can feed 4k at 60p in a easy way.
i think the very soon upcoming info for hdmi 2.0 will support it.
but question will be how fast this inputs will be at a 515?

Their plan at least used to be was to use panavision 3D system but they went bankrupt.

The 3D lens is not included in the price and I believe it has to be leased from Real D and its pretty expensive. sony reportly will be offering a shutter 3D system using the lens used for 2D. Sony is slowly working on setting up an avenue for HT purchasers. Involves issues of service and installation by whoever will be the distributer or reseller. Obviously a silver screen is required for passive3D. The Stewart Firehawk LS (and that does not mean Firehawk but Firehawk LS has a high enough polarization ratio to work wll here though the extinction rastio is slightly below what is the normal spec for a commercial theater to avoid most people noticing any ghosting.

Ted. Its a commercial machine where source material is repeated for scheduled shows. One might ask how are 2d trailers etc shown before a feature 3D presentation. simple. They use another projector. The lens change sled is to assisting in the physical detachment of the 2D lens and the attachment of the 3D lens and of source the other way when the feature is a 2D one.

Is this HDCP compliant? You better check. There is no need for HDCP on commercial projectors. DCI uses a different encryption system that is HDSDI and Ethernet based. I know Barco has HDCP on some of it's commercial products. Christie does not unless that has changed recently. Sony?

It is HDCP compliant. I believe 2 hdmi 1.4 ins.

i check myself and fact is sony is now in talk with dolby.

After having implemented SKOLL with Dolby and having seen Gravity at the Dolby Reference theater all I can say that the these Dolby systems are horrible, completely unwatchable, circular polarization is the way to gp.

Wolgang you should implement a circ polarized system and compare. There is no comparison. Specially when using the Sony Passive glasses. NON negotiable, after seeing what is possible at ALBIORIX.

i did this compare no thank you .... no silver Screen is possible for me because of the problemes that silver Screens all have.
i had 37 years ago my first test with different silverscreens and till today they not can solve the bugs i hate.

but LLE will have soon a nice 3D system:)
other will follow or make it better.....
buy this time next year we will see somthing very nice in 3d!

The LLE6P looks promising indeed. BUT AT THE PRESENT TIME you should be experimenting with the stewart silver 5d and the MDI


Hi Wolfgang but your tests were conducted too long ago. The movie Gravity is one heck of a well directed 3D film, to have to remove your glasses every 10 minutes to give your eyes a breather is UNACCEPTABLE.

The Stewart silver 5d ( we just implemented in Moscow) is very unsilvery looking and in addition there is the realD white screen, which is also very unsilvery looking. These are the new generation in polarized white screens.

With these two screens the BUG hotspots are nearly invisible, while the reflection and color fringing that you continously put up with is not watchable for extended periods of time. Trust me try it and you will see I am not wrong.

I say it's time to start comparing again. ;-) And don't forget to use the SONY consumer 3d glasses, their MTF is simply incredible. Doen't your Sony 84 bring a pair of those.

i test all this Peter and i am fine with my setup.

i buy the Samsung UHD 85" not the Sony.
the Samsung is the only Display that can Show today 4k nativ in 3d at least my stills.
all the 4k Samsung can do this(55" 65" and 85" and in us i think the 110") if you know how to process such a 4k 3d Picture in mpo format.
