Just got back from the store, sort of an impulse buy as I just bought 2 TV's , one for the main bedroom and the other for the living room. The quality of them in the store was just too much to pass up. I am really looking forward to when these 4K projectors get themselves sorted out.

Cheers Dave

Thanks, I have been looking at TV's for a while now, but when the Sharps came on sale they were just too hard to resist. Amazing how much TV technology has come. I wonder if there will be a day when we won't need PJ's? At this rate of advance, it is hard to see the makers stopping...

I think the massive size of these panels is a big reason why projector talk is nothing like it used to be. Still 170" wide panel;s might be a bit yet.Congrats on the purchase ,let us know how you are enjoying them.

Thanks!

@Art, I am still relatively new to all this and I sadly came into PJ's when CRT's were no longer being made. But, I know what you mean, things are just not what they were when those first 780 & 1080p PJ's started coming out. I would give it 5 years until a 150" TV will be affordable.

Way to go Dave !

I think the biggest obstacle to low prices on massive screens will be the packing and transport.

Cheers,

Peter M

Cheers,

My guess is larger screens will have to be some form of roll up LCD or OLED technology.

Cheers,
The Galaxy Note 3 will supposedly have the flexible OLED display. The flexible OLED panel has been around for a year or so I believe. So maybe a roll up display is less than 10 years away?

I am not sure, but I have still yet to take delivery, so they may not yet be shipping.

The 4K unit I saw in the shop was a smaller model, but the picture was outstanding.

I saw the commercial versions of the Sharp 4K LCD displays (60 and 70 inch?) at ISE this January. The lookangles were typically LCD, the rest looked okay, to my untrained eyes.

No matter how big flat panels become, they're still just TVs...big TVs with shiny glass that reflect the table lamp and that exhibit back-lit glowing images. I have several...one in the living room and one in the bedroom. I watch them for sporting events and the news, reality shows etc. But I would never ever think of them as a substitute for a two-piece projection system. They are not capable of delivering a truly cinematic movie-going experience...one in which our field of vision is filled with pure unadulterated images unencumbered by the vale of glossy glassy "TV-ness"...a vale which inhibits 'suspension of disbelief'. TVs are convenient appliances, but (IMO) they don't belong in a serious home theater.

Well if you turn off the lights there is no glare or if TV's used the matte displays such as the ones used on Thinkpads that are not glossy, just saying.

Wouldn't mind having the Panasonic 4K or 8K, they are large enough to fill my field of vision. And yes glass makes for a mirror, but still... And two piece front projection has dark areas, called shadows.

Huh?...is that a blanket statement or might you be referring to under-performing entry-level projectors that are matched up with inappropriate screens?

I disagree, I think TV tech will eventually give a better image than a projector. The ultra high dynamic range screens I saw demoed a few years ago ate any PJ tech for breakfast (The Brightside TV). It is only a matter of time I think before something like that comes along in screen sizes big enough to fill a HT wall.
Currently I wouldn't trade my projector for any TV out there, but I think the main obstacle will be shipping. I can't see a roll-up screen happening in the next 20 years, if for no other reason that the difficulty of mounting it flat again.

DON'T feed the troll.

I don't know the model number. I checked the other day and there is still no word and when it will ship, so I am guessing this is a pre-order. I was looking at 80" TV's when the sales guy suggested the 4K, but I said to him that I did not want to go smaller than 80". He told me Sharp has an 80" 4K and that is what I ordered.

If it was hdmi 2.0 I would be all over it, but sadly it is not and they do not have a plug in like sony or an external box like Samsung to upgrade them later....Hmmm guess I am still torn between the sony, or Panasonic......

Although....the 90" sets are full array back lit and have been calling my name....UHD is hard to pass up but it's only at 65" right now with the 2.0 HDMI....not sure when a set that's above 65" with 2.0 will be available....and if I can get a 90" FALD set for the same price as a 65" 4k, it makes the decsicion even harder.

Nice and congrats, demos are always great if you can get good deals and the sets have not been screwed with too much!

But......what does this have to do with Dave and his Sharp 80" sets or 4k in general?

lol just giving you a hard time!
