I'm wanting to convert an old 4 screen theatre from 35mm to digital as cheaply as possible. Existing customers are used to 35mm so only a slight improvement in picture quality is needed. I would only be showing 2D.

I'd like to get projectors and CMS for less than $40k (all in). Should I be looking for used equipment or low end new equipment? Is it even possible to find equipment this cheap to use in a commercial theatre?

There should be plenty of used professional older technology projectors out there.

I would contact Christie first to see if they have any good used deals or refer you to a dealer.

This is a consumer forum so contacts here are limited.

There are some used series 1 projectors out there but they usually don't come with a warranty so if one of them brake down after a weeks use you are looking at 5-20K in repair costs. They also often have higher running costs.

A new projector+server can maybe be had for a bit under 40k on a small screen but installation might run it over 40k depending on the current conditions in your projection booth. You will also probably need sound upgrades unless you already have on all screens 5.1 speaker setup and a sound processor with 4xAES input.

Quite a discrepancy, between 40K per screen and 40K all in.

I doubt you could get even used projectors for all four screens at under 40K, maybe really early series 1 projectors but they will have maybe a couple of years of expected life time left.

Cool, thanks for the comments. I don't want to waste money, and if I need to spend some more to do it right then that is okay. What projectors and sound should I look at that would be quality but least expensive?

Thanks

For smaller rooms I would look at NEC. They make several models under 2K lamp power. Other players are Christie and Barco. You may even find some deals on older Sony 110 series 4K projectors.
