The Sony VPL-VW885ES demo looked excellent, with superb colors, detail, and contrast.

What were your thoughts on the Sony speaker system used in the demo? You don't hear much about Sony speakers, not sure if that's because they don't promote them much or if it's because they don't stack up well...

Is the VW-885es superior to the VW1100-es?

I must admit, I wasn't paying much attention to the sound; I was focused on the image. I've heard Sony speakers before and been very impressed.

I'm sure the projector is great, but $25K is too much regardless of how good it is. If you wait a year, it will be $15K and then $5K the year after.

Excellent question! In short, yes and no. It doesn't have as good lens and optics as the 1100ES (it uses the same lens and optics as the lesser models, not the same as the 1100ES which is a shame) and it has poorer native contrast and black levels performance as compared with the 1100ES. But on the flipside it's laser light source as compared with lamp source. Plus it's all of native 4K (input and output), HDR, WCG, 18 Gbps, and is technically capable of displaying Dolby Vision via firmware update (although it's not confirmed or definite whether this will actually happen). All things considered, overall it could be perceived as being superior to the VW1100ES, but not in every aspect.

I should add that it displays a great looking image. Precisely how and to what extent its performance as compared with the other Sony projectors and the competition is yet to be determined, as is how much value for money it represents, but from what we've seen so far it's a great projector.

Let me answer your question with a question: Does the VW1100ES look as good and have as much brightness as the JVC RS4500? Because the 885 does.

A couple of other things to point out. The 885 has Panamorph anamorphic squeeze settings so you never have to move the anamorphic lens - no heavy, complicated sled.

It also has HDR unlike the 1100.

I saw demos of both the Sony and the JVC laser-based projectors. They both looked great. The difference I noticed was that the black level and contrast appeared to be better with the JVC. Not that the Sony was terrible, but the JVC was better. But it's difficult to say how much of an impact screen material made.

That said, I think they are both extremely overpriced. Laser-based light sources are becoming common in other brands of projectors at significantly lower price points. I'd wait a year or two for laser-based light sources to become mainstream before parting with that much cash for either JVC or Sony.

How can you tell that the contrast is poorer than the VW1100, the VW885 is suspected to be at least as good as VW675, and 675 is as good as VW1100.
So what makes you think otherwise?

(1) What I saw at both IFA 2017 and CEDIA 2017; and (2) Because of the move from lamp to laser light source, wherein all HT laser projectors to date have suffered reduced contrast as compared with their lamp-based equivalents. That said, we won't have definitive confirmation regarding this until we receive delivery and can take measurements. But please don't get me wrong, the contrast and black levels aren't bad, I just think they're better with respect to the 1100ES. We shall see.

I see. Thanks for explaining! So its sort of a mixture between a VW5000es, a VW1100es and something like a VW300es...?

Thanks for reporting. When you say "great contrast", do you mean correct contrast, or 'showroom' contrast?

It's only a hobby

It's more a lesser sibling to the Sony 5000ES than a replacement for the Sony 1100ES that's sort of a mixture between a 5000ES and 675ES/550ES

Yes. I saw the demo several times. Once with Arrow. The 885 looked very good and I love the fact that we are finally seeing more laser based 4K options.

I tend to agree. I'm glad that companies like Sony are producing these excellent, high-end devices, but I also have to admit that -- for the vast majority of us -- expensive products like this projector exist in a realm I've come to refer to as "tech porn": gorgeous equipment we can only fantasize about in pictures while we read their sexy specs.

Routinely stumbling down rabbit holes...

Still loving my discount LS10.5K, e-shift or not, HDR is terrific. Laser is the future, never been happier, thing starts up and shuts down like a regular TV and does not heat up the room.
