OK! We're on for the Saturday, the 23rd of April.

Please mark it on your calendar. Bruce is flying out all his gear from FLA to CA ... I asked him to post pics and description of his machined fan hub. This should be a most interesting experience.

Somewhat OT:

I think Bruce Thigpen's invention is potentially ground-breaking, and this post is in no way meant to be critical of it. But I cannot help but recall some (historic and folkloric) research on LF effects performed a few decades ago. Here are some results of an experiment done in 1960 by Ziegenruecher and Magid to test the effects of short exposure to very low frequency vibration on 10 subject. I'm just giving the leading symptoms at each frequency for ease of ASCII presentation.

1 Hz - 8 subjects reported dyspnea
2 Hz - 8 subjects reported dyspnea
3 Hz - 5 subjects reported dyspnea and general discomfort
4 Hz - 5 subjects reported general discomfort
5 Hz - 6 subjects reported general discomfort
6 Hz - 4 subjects reported chest pain and general discomfort
7 Hz - 5 subjects reported chest pain
8 Hz - 4 subjects reported chest pain
9 Hz - 5 subjects reported general discomfort
10 Hz - 3 subjects reported testicular pain
15 Hz - 8 subjects reported general discomfort

My favorites are the dyspnea at 1-3 Hz and testicular pain at 10 Hz! Note that there was absolutely no evidence of lasting effects from these tests. Since there will be at least one MD present, I look forward to a full report. :D

Regards,
Terry

Dizzman, somebody told me you had brass balls, should it should not be a problem for you.

Guys, this is on the Saturday... so that means the 22nd... I don't know why I can't read a calendar.

Terry, that is very interesting data. We'll report if we can feel the pain, so to speak.

10.5 Hz is called the "Sympathy Vibration." It causes menstrual cramps in male subjects.
If there is room, I would like to attend on the 22'd as well.

I think we should all be scared of anything that causes menstrual cramps in male subjects.

I'd prefer to avoid labor pains, too.

Tzucc

I am getting vertigo with all of these changes. Count me in.

I suggest the 10Hz test with Refugio Balais (aka Richie Duroseau) as the sole listening subject.

I think brass resonates at 10Hz, so Dizz is in for some pleasure, pain or both depending on his, umm, preferences.

I am sorry about mixing up the dates.

Jeffmac, we may try and leave the setup in place for the 23rd (Sunday) so we can demo to you in the AM...

I think we can accomodate all that have responded so far.

Perhaps Bruce will respond with some pics of the fan prototypes in production...

Hi tzucc,

When the date changed to Easter weekend, I had figured I couldn't make it, but bumping it to the 22nd/23rd might make it viable. Of course I would bring my TEF 25 with as well. Let me take a look at flights. With all the snow dumping around Lake Tahoe, I think this is a darn good excuse to make it out that way. :D

Ironically a couple weeks ago I attended a TEF training class where Keir, from PMI, and I chatted a bit about this demo. I know you already sent an invite, but if he hasn't agreed to yet, and he's in town, maybe we can bug Keith Yates some more.

More than anything I think the most intriguing part of this will be the relative ease with which we would be able to experiment with the subjective addition of such spectral content. I'm not of the mind that it matters so much exactly how it's produced, but practical experience with that sort of capability is very limited.

I have been corresponding with Keith and he will indeed try to make it.
Some of the PMI folks will be coming down as well.

Any other high end acoustics installers/designers are welcome.

Should be fun.

Hey tzucc,

I have to ask, What is being supplied to handle the crossover and to filter / EQ the response of this thing? Having implemented a few multi-way subwoofer systems, there are some significant factors to be compensated for... Even more so with the fan kicking in below 30Hz. I forget, do you have the Lexicon MC-8 or MC-12?

Mark, a most pertinent question. Bruce is working those exact issues right now. It has been hard for me to measure the Lexi MC12B low frequency response. If you have any ideas, please post it, esp a low pass crossover for 10-20Hz range.
