Yannick- what about the idea of htpc software that runs and reads a time code or something other than the dd signal for syncing? You mentioned a problem with knowing the movie being played, there has got to be a solution for that issue.

Don't get me wrong there is some solutions and that's why our R&D is looking at the best way... remember if we change our way to synchronize people with a new controller wouldn't be able to play the actual stuff... that's were it gets complicated. To move forward and have everything working seemlesly

For anyone who is interested in listening to high-resolution soundtracks and synching the DD track with your D-Box simultaneously:

I pulled out the manual of my Pioneer Elite BDP-HD1 Bluray player to study how it handles audio tracks. There is a matrix in the manual that indicates the disc audio format (DD, DD+, DTS, etc.) and how those formats are sent out via the analog, digital, and HDMI outputs, respectively.

When the appropriate settings are enabled, this player will send out a DD True HD track as 5.1 PCM over the analog outputs and also as DD over the digital coax output.

In addition, it will will send out a DTS-HD track as 5.1 PCM over the analog outputs and also as DTS over the digital coax output.

Caveat: I know there is no such thing as PCM via analog, but that is what they have in the manual, so I just copied it verbatim.

So, this theoretically should allow me to listen to high-resolution via analog and have the D-Box move via the digital coax. I have two Bluray movies that have a these high-resolution formats: Kingdom of Heaven has a DTS-HD track, and the Fifth Element (Remastered) has a DD True HD track.

I will probably check this out this weekend and report back for anyone who cares.

The only problem is that PCM seems to be the most prevalent soundtrack on Bluray discs.

I'm not talking about an entirely new way to read the system- I am just talking about a way to accomodate hddvd users with htpcs, as well as anyone who wants to run media from their htpc. I thought that offering a software solution that runs on an htpc would give you another way to read the timecode of the movie besides syncing with the dd signal. I don't think that would take away usage from the current users, as the motion codes would still be written the same way.

Good point Mark we can synchronize with DD true HD or DTS HD just not PCM 5.1 only

I'll take a look at the Blu Ray disc....

Also:

True, but that still mean output via HDMI. I plan on getting the HDMI upgrade to the Meridian processor soon... I need to call them today as well to see how the digital monitor output works. I also need to see if I can hook the optical from the PS3 directly to the Meridian and then hook the digital coax monitor output to the D-Box controller....

I'm defintely a fan of lossless over PCM (just because lossless makes sense in terms of conserving resources with no quality loss). However, some Blu Ray discs offer PCM output only as the highest quality track, at least for now.

FWIW, I have my own low-end solution to the HDDVD situation. I just use a $30 Wal Mart DVD player and visually sync it to the HD disc. I feed the soundtrack from the HD into my Arcam and the DD out from the cheap DVD into the D-Box. Is this ideal? Of course not, but, I am hooked on D-Box and if I can watch a movie with codes I will absolutely do it. Besides, I think the writing is on the wall. I was in the HD-DVD camp at first and reluctantly purchased a Blu Ray player so I could have both. I think Blu Ray is going to be the format, personally. (Hey after Beta, Sony deserves a format win). Not trying to turn this into HDDDV vs Blu Ray debate, just trying to say, I understand why Yannick and the folks at D-Box are kind of focusing on Blu Ray.

Yannick, this is the first year I am going to miss since 2001. It sucks, I really want to go but for health reasons, I'm staying behind. Doctor doesn't want me dealing with the altitude I'm sure everyone will keep us all posted!

Have a good show.

Hmmmm... I could not get "The Guardian" Blu Ray to work... Strange, I put in the Blu Ray of "Casino royale, and it autodetects perfectly... I put in POTC 2 and also The guardian, and nothing... Well, at least it autodetects POTC 2, but I get nothing. I can't get either to work when manual selecting either? Why does Casino royale work perfectly then? I'm using the PS3 optical output... Either way it works with casino royale, so I am a bit confused....

I verified that the BDP-HD1 does in fact send out a DD soundtrack over SPDIF (Coaxial) with the Fifth Element (Remastered) with the DD True HD soundtrack. I was also going to check Kingdom of Heaven's DTS HD soundtrack, but that code has not been created yet.

ROCKY BALBOA: worked great. Excellent job by the way! Really enjoyed the fight with tactile and motion.

Also, The Fountain worked well.

So I am having problems with POTC 2, and Guardian: No luck getting it to work, any suggestions?? Why would 3 work, and two not work (so far, I have yet to test others).

What controller are you using? seems to be only you having those issues with those movies... Let me know I'll try something.

Hi,

Watched Ghost Rider: Awesome job on the tactile and motion!! worked well.

So, it seems so far I have isues with POTC 2 and Guardian only... The model of the Controller is the standard outboard controller (not the PC version). I'll have to see the default audio selection for those two movies, but I'm only using optical and Dolby Digital/DTS, and the audio was heard just fine...
