Going to be upgrading my sound system in a couple months to my first real system of seperates. Due to where I live I won't really be able to demo any of the system except the lower end Energy, and will have to order the other 2 blindly. The system will be used about 70% for hometheater (movies/satilite viewing), 20% music, and $10 gaming. For music I listen to a wide variety but mostly Rap, hard rock/metal, dance....in that order. I'm only going to go 5.1 due to not having room for rear surrounds, but will leave the option open for the future as i'd like this system to last a few years.
Now i'll get to the systems and plan on using the same reciever for all sets the Yamaha RXV 3800.....

System A: Paradigm monitor 11
CC-390 center
ADP-390 Surrounds
SVS PB13 Ultra Sub
$4312.20

System B: Axiom M80 Tower
VP150 Center
QS8 Surrounds
EP500 Sub
$3428.41

System C: Same as above except with a PB13 Ultra
$4161.62

System D: Energy C-500 Tower
CC-100 Center
C-R100 Surrounds
SVS PB13 Ultra
$3115.20

Now money really isn't an object but I do have to stick with the selections listed due to availability in my area. My early favorite is the Paradigms as i've always they've been a favorite of mine for years even with limited to no listening experiance. I thank you for your time and hope to recieve a little educated help with my decision.

At first I wondered how that works, then I realized I've been a big Ferrari fan with limited or no driving experience

lol ya first real listening experiance I had at a sound show. Was about 11 or so years ago and think it was when the servo first came out. Even though the show was in a big auditorium it still pounded running 2.1 with some paradigm towers (can't remember which ones). Since then i've just liked the apperance and the fact that they were built in Canada.

like I said I won't be able to audition any of them except the Energy's which I have (minus the Ultra). Of course I like the Studio's but unfortunatly when I said price wasn't an object I did mean for my first choices. As much as i'd like those are a little to pricey for me, but thanks for the input.

had the exact same energy setup and replaced it with the same paradigm setup minus the rears. the sound quality IMO, was sooo much better when i switched. the paradigms do lack a little bit of low end compared to the energy's but with a nice sub whats the diff???

You dont believe in buying ID speakers.....

Elemental Designs, Ascend and AV123 are three online companies that produce performance/$$$ systems. Those three are talked about all the time on here too so there isnt a lack of information on them. Yes, I am an owner of products from ALL three companies.

I am also located on an island on the northwest coast of B.C. Canada (just south of the alaskian panhandle), so I don't really want to pay the shipping. I'm already going to swollow the $125 it'll cost to ship the SVS sub. Once again thanks for the input but i'm going to be sticking to the choices listed. The energy's I can buy local, the axioms are free shipping, and the paradigm's are about an 1.25 hr drive from me.

Ok, I vote for Paradigms!!

The PB13 ultra is a no-brainer too!

Also, dont the Axiom and the paradigm sound a lot a like? That is what I have read on these forums. btw, I have heard lots of Paradigms, never heard the Axioms.

thanks looks like the majority here like the paradigm's. can't wait for some big sound as i'm using a panasonic htib as of now. the passive 6.5" sub just isn't doing it for me.

nucl3arboNg,

I'm a canuck too so I feel you on the shipping

fwiw, based on your budget, I think you can do alot better than those Paradigms/Energy's by going ID and still come out ahead, even with shipping

hmmmm.......I really think based on my location i'm really gonna get killed with the shipping, but another plus of my buying either the paradigm's/energy's is I can use a native status card and pay no taxes. even just to ship an xbox here from futureshop will cost me about $30 and that's by ground. would hate to see the shipping on a pair of towers from the states.

Just as a suggestion: Not sure about shipping costs to Canada.

AV123 X-Statik
AV123 X-Voce
AV123 X-LS Encore

This may be true, but if you factor in the risk of them not working out, return shipping is going to be very painful to deal with.

Just my opinion, but I think the Paradigm system would be an excellent choice given the OP's situation.

after looking at there site for shipping info I would be in a good deal of trouble with them. for one they ship ups which would mean additional brokerage fee's coming across the border. where I live the only couriers I have are canada post, and purolator. all others are sub-contracted out which makes it very difficult for me to recieve my order due to no local drop point. thank you very much for the suggestion, but I think i'd end up paying more in the long run.

Given that - I'd wholeheartedly recommend the Paradigm setup!

any opinions on how the pb13 will mate with the paradigm's, or would one either the axiom sub or a cheaper paradigm do the job?

The pb13 would be great with the Paradigms and that's probably what I would do in your spot.

You could get a Paradigm sub, and they are quite decent, but I think you'll get more "bang for the buck" with the pb13. The Axiom subs are pretty highly regarded, but once again, you are shipping a large, heavy package. If you can afford it, stick with the SVS.

axiom offers free shipping and the pb13 is $125 shipping but I included that in the prices above. yes I think by the reputation of the ultra i'd be second guessing myself if I went with something else .

looks like Paradigm is it . The most expensive of the bunch but I think i'll be much happier with that choice. Now time to start saving I think by the end of august I should have enough. Thanks for all your input and i'll make sure to post my experiences.....

My vote goes for the Paradigm setup but with that excellent SVS sub I think that the Monitor 11 is overkill---unless your room is auditorium-sized, the Monitor 7 or even the 5 would be plenty good enough as long as you keep that sub on, especially with 70% HT usage.

thanks for the reply....I just talked to a dealer on the phone today and he thought the 11's would be overkill as well. he suggested the 7's as an alternative and of course that sub will be going 100% of the time . I might just go with the 9's incase I move into a bigger place in the next couple years just to future proof myself cause i'd like this system to last at least 5 years or so. I'm also thinking of getting the onkyo 875 instead of the yamaha to power it.

Wow, an honest dealer...how refreshing!

Those Canadian prices are brutal though...ever thought of driving a couple of hours and sneaking in the same speaks bought in say, Seattle? : )

i'm prolly at least a 22 hr. drive from seattle . like I said earlier i'm near the alaskian panhandle on an island......those prices are with all shipping and taxes included.

oh but yes I was very surprised at him suggesting the cheaper, smaller speakers. he knew I wouldn't be buying off him. I just called because i'm going across country to visit my mother next month and this dealer is near her house. i'm going in to demo some stuff so I know a lil bit more before my purchase.

I demoed the paradigm 11s and the 9s. I liked the sound of the 9s better they just seemed cleaner and more detailed. They do lack in the bass dept but with a good sub who cares?
They were not my brand of choice, but if you are stuck with those particular choices you don't care about my brand of choice. They are good speakers and you will be happy with them.

In case this makes your decision easier, the C-500s are on sale right now at FS, 44% off. There is also free shipping (I believe) if you order on their web-site. Also, you may want to consider identical front 3 speakers instead of a center, if your setup allows it.

yes thanks I did notice them onsale at FS. I can get them locally for close to the same price with no-tax so i'm not to worried about that. I do have to wait a bit because i'm going on vacation next month so prolly end of August for purchase.

Since i'm prolly gonna get the svs sub I probably will get either the monitor 7's or 9's and put the extra money into the onkyo sr875.
