Hi All

Hope this is the right section - I'm interested in one of the following home theatre systems, unfortunately I'm limited for choice over here. I can get one of the following, and am undecided whether the price difference is justified.

System 1
Yamaha RX-V663 Av Receiver
Yamaha DVD-S661 DVD Player
KEF IQ1 / 2C / 5
KEF PSW2500
US$2200

System 2
Yamaha RX-V863 Av Receiver
Yamaha DVD-S661 DVD Player
KEF IQ1 / 6C / 7
KEF PSW2500
US$3100

System 3
Yamaha RX-V3800 Av Receiver
Yamaha DVD-S1800 DVD Player
KEF IQ8DS / 6C / 9
KEF PSW3500
US$4000

In the two times I have put together an audio system I have really over spent for what i really needed.
Back in 1989 when I work for an Audio video company and was able to buy audio equipment at wholesale, I bought a really cool looking pair of pyramid shaped speakers (brand?) with the tweeters balls on top (classical music type speakers), spent $1400, a few month later I figured I could have spent $800 (or less) for some JBLs and been happier (better base sound).
A few months back I purchase Infinity Beta 40s, 20s, C360 at the close out prices for $780, now I've figured out I could have just gotten the Infinity Primus Theater Package 5.0 for $310, which have been fine for my little apartment.

So unless you have some really good reason to spend more money, just go with the cheapest.
You can always sell off the stuff in the future if you get the upgrade bug.

Infinity Beta 5.1

My main problem is the cost of equipment here (South Africa), so I'd prefer to get it right the first time, and not have to upgrade for awhile

I'm not sure what the above would be in the US, but I'm sure it'd be cheaper.

You are totally fixed on KEF as the brand for your speakers?

I would say audition speakers from various brands first, picking an AVR is not as hard as speaker selection. With AVRs you just look at the features.

The problem is finding a place that has various brands over here, I have only managed to find one chain store, and all their stores carry the same brand.

Anything wrong with Kef though?

Nothing really wrong with KEF. Was just wondering.

I understand that KEF and Yamaha may be your only options, but why are those particular combinations your only options?

Can you not get iQ3s?

How about:

663 or 863 (only get the 863 if it offers some specific functionality that you need that the 663 doesn't offer)
S661 (again, only consider the S1800 if it offers something you need that the S661 doesn't offer)
iQ5s/iQ6c/iQ1s
PSW3500 (I'd get the best sub you can get)

Want to save more? Consider iQ1s/iQ2c/iQ1. But I would only consider the iQ2c if you are pairing it with iQ1s. For Option1, with the iQ5s, you need the iQ6c. I do not know what size room you have, but iQ1/iQ2c/iQ1 with the PSW3500 would be a nice setup. This would give you, essentially, matching speakers all the way around. And the 3500 (instead of the 2500) would give you the oomph that larger front speakers might otherwise give you.

Thanks - I see your point - the reason for the above is that they come as a package, so you save about 30%... a bit annoying though.

The other choice I have is the following (just struggling to find a store within 1500km)
Onkyo TX-SR804E
7.1 Channel THX Certified Receiver + HDMI

Onkyo DV-SP504E

DVD-Audio/SACD Player with HDMI
Polk Audio RTi-10 (with Power Port)
Polk Audio RTi-6
Polk Audio CSi-5 Centre
Polk Audio PSW-505 Sub (optional)

for $3,300

BTW.

I plan on using the system as follows:
1.) for Bluray
2.) for Music
3.) for PS3
4.) for HDTV (on day when it becomes available).

In that order.

This is $2600 - any help appreciated.

I've heard iQ7 pass weekend with some Yamaha (forgot the model) it sound pretty good. The soundstage is much better than others in the same price range. Kef uni-Q really give a nicer soundstage and present. Not sure about the rest of the system but HT system usually sound good with good dynamic and clear dialog so if 6C sound good to you then it should be good. Have you auditioned these systems yet?

KEF is a great speaker. Consider also PSB if available.
I am more concerned about the choice of electronics.
NAD or Anthem would be a better choice than Yamaha. Even Onkyo for that matter. Yamaha is likely to be on the bright side with those speakers.
