I owned a 5.1 Bose Acoustimass system from the time I was 18. Just recently, in the last 2 months, my ears 'turned on' and I realized they sounded like crap. If I close my eyes, it sounds like things are coming from a speaker and not like I'm there...

Is this the world of Hi-Fi I have just entered? Is the point of Hi-Fi to make things sound like I'm there?

I just spent $2600 on 2 av123 850s, 2 450s, 1 220, and MFW-15. Am I going to be disappointed? I just want things to sound like I'm IN the action, and not watching it on a small black and white tv set...

Also, the deal I got from av123 might not ship until January... Is there anything else you guys would recommend for around that price that sounds as close to REAL as I can get? I need the same type of speaker 5.1 floor standing...

I'd say that's a fair description of what HiFi strives to delivery.

That all depends on how close to reality you expect to get. Suffice to say they should be a big improvement over your Bose setup.

That's what I'm hoping for.

I remember a scene from some movie I was watching on the Bose and there was suppose to be a lightning crack and then an immediate roar of thunder. The little 2.5" speakers couldn't do both at the same time, so it compressed the sound and you hear it all in the middle. That's when I decided to toss them.

Has anybody head the Salk SongTower RT AND the Rocket 850's? Are they similar in sound quality or do they completely blow the 850s away?

I hear the Salk gets slightly better reviews, but I wouldn't get as much for the money if I went with them.

Going from a Bose system to Rockets, suffice it to say you will not be disappointed, you will be rediscovering your movies and cds in no time. I know the wait is hard, but it will be worth it.

What receiver are you going to be driving them with?

I don't think you will be dissappointed by the Rockets. I havent heard of them but some people love them. I never hear anybody complain about them.

The Salk's get better reviews but they are also a lot more expensive. That songtower RT model is about 2600 for the front pair only where as you got full 5.1 with a huge sub. And I don't even think you can get RT in surrounds or center so you wouldn't have much of any timber match. If you went with the standard ST's you'd still need about $4k to get a 5.1 setup. Whenever you up your budget by 50% people will always recommend something that will 'blow away' the cheaper option, that is the way hifi audio works.

You're going to love the Rockets, don't worry, and you got an amazing value.

Your new system will be a huge improvement. The next two things you may want to consider is improved amplification ( a better receiver or separates) and some room treatment.

your new rocket system will kick some ass man. If your looking for an improved cinematic experience you definately put your money the the right place. That system is absolutely kick ass, i've heard it a few times and i really enjoy it. My buddy has dual MFW-15's, and lets just say they will definately kick you in the chest.

Unless you are a very, very critical listener I would just stick with the Rockets over the Salk just because it is cheaper and they are a great system. Salk edges the Rockets but from my research, not by much....atleast not by the price anyway in my opinion.

There will always be better things out there......FOR A PRICE that is.

OH BTW....when watching movies....YEAH...It sounds like I'm there.

You will be so impressed and pleased with the rockets, so try to hang in there for your delivery.

The Salk's I have not heard them, but I'm sure they are an impressive speaker. From what I have read about Salk's vs. Rocket's would not be enough to justify the difference in price for what you are getting with your rocket package.

Good luck and post some pics & impressions when you get your new speakers.

That is a very good price on that system.

If your still looking for comparisons, the person you want to speak to is Nuance, he used to own the Rocket 850's and now has the very first RT Song Tower. I have heard both the Rocket 850's and the Salk Song Tower RT at my house in a speaker shootout, both are noteworthy speakers, I would put the Rockets closer in sound about 85-90% of the Paradigm Studio's. The RT SongTowers are in a whole different league.

I loved the ST's the sound was amazing from top to bottom, but one thing that still sticks out in my mind is they just don't go loud enough for me. I like my system to be able to get loud and stay clean. But hey, they are only 2 - 5" drivers. Not everyone needs that, so if that is not a requirement, I would certainly have no problems owning the Salk's, but if you want loud, you could easily take the next step up the line towards the V3's....

Shoot out a PM to Nuance.... He'll be more then happy to give you comparisons....

I would make the same comment about the Rockets.

I have owned the 760s and the 450s, I currently use the 450s for surrounds but overall the rockets didnt hang well enough with my subs. The dynamic punch in the higher SPL range wasnt there.

Of course I would also tell the OP to IGNORE THIS He has made a great choice and he is going to be very happy since he is coming from complete crap

I think the 850's probably have a little more headroom, but how much I couldn't tell you, maybe a couple of db's....

I can't imagine going from Blose to Rocket 850's.... that will be one of the most significant jumps one would make.... You will be saying WOW for a long time.....

What are you planning on powering this system with....

If you are talking about music (vs movies), then the weakest link is the recording. Certainly the better the equipment the better off you are, but 99% of the recordings are messed up and you don't stand a chance of the "real" feel even with the best equipment.

Luckily there are lists of the good stuff floating around. You don't have to buy the crap.

But I find that people's judgements can be bad. I've been burned several times when people rave about the audio quality of a recording and I find that it's unlistenable.

Treat your room. After placing panels on your reflection points, you'll feel like you're in a bubble with just the sound, and nothing else.

Raymond, The Rockets are more forward sounding.... not as natural and balanced as the Song Towers..... As I stated earlier, the 850's are very close in nature to the Paradigm Studios....

To answer the same question asked many times...

I have an Onkyo TX-SR876 on the way. It's 140W x 7.

Is that enough? I can't see myself needing more...

Also, I know this is in the wrong thread, but the video processor abysmal like everyone says or is it just abysmal compared to others in its class?

I'm upgrading from a 674 so I'm thinking 1080p over 720 would be enough of an increase to wow me.

Yes that receiver is fine.

If the video processor isn't up to snuff, can't you just bypass it?

The delivery date on the Rockets is scaring me. What about Pinnacle? I have a dealer who said he would give me a deal. I have two questions...

Is this a deal?

And do they sound good compared to Rockets?

This is what the dealer sent me:

L&R mains Pinnacle BD1000 - $1300pr
Center Pinnacle BD 600 - $795
Surrounds Pinnacle BD1000 - $1300pr
SUB Pinnacle SUPERSONIC - $1599
=====================
MSRP = $4994

Your Price $2699 plus shipping

Nothing for nothing, but 33lbs for each front speaker for the BD1000's doesn't say alot to me about construction... I think your going backwards in quality at this point....

How about some used Paradigm Studio's off Audiogon...

Badgirl will likely also have some Center channels to match if you contact her.

Sorry, I didn't realize they offered one finish only, my bad. I'm sure you could have them painted, I know a guy who had his done by an auto painting shop.

Relax, it's not a race to pick your speakers. If you take your time with this decision you are much more likely to be happy with your purchase, for a much longer time. You will spend a lot less time thinking "what if." Bottom line is that if you like the Pinnacle better than the rest of your options. Go for it! I still think you need to get out there and listen to what ever you can find. Your ears just woke up, feed them.
