if I had to make that choice, I'd pick Audyssey MultEQ + R56Ci over MultEQ XT and the smaller center.

+1 Speakers in general are a much better investment than AVRs and other components, they can last a long time if not abused, speaker technology doesn't change much, you can be happy with them for many years to come. Components you always have to upgrade for new standards, e.g. 4K, HDMI 2.0, etc. not worth investing a lot in today's greatest.

I'm hoping someone can give me some advise on the following, as I have limited knowledge of audio.
I never much used speakers in the past for TV viewing, besides some HTIB. Well, I made an impulse buy at Emp Tek and ordered (2) R55Ti, (2) R55Wi, (4) R5Bi, (1) R56Ci... obviously went overboard, as I'm likely only planning on doing a 5.1 system due to the layout of my family room.
I also bought the Outlaw Ultra X12 and a Denon X4000.

The two questions that I now have are:

1. For a 5.1 system, should I use the R5Bi or R55Wi for the surrounds? Note that these speakers will likely be mounted behind the seating position.
2. Will the Denon X4000 sufficiently power these speakers? Especially the R55Ti which are 6 ohm.

Thanks in advance!

Fully agree. Once you have speakers and a good sub in place, it's a good time for a nice AVR. But always spend on the speakers first.

I would use the surrounds in your 5.1 and put the bookshelves in another room (Zone 2?). Or cancel them. Others may have a different opinion.

The X4000 will power them fine.

Impulse buy is right . But at least you bought good equipment (very nice sub and AVR, btw) and the EMP Teks are very good for the price. I'm curious why one would spend that kind of money for bipole rears. Perhaps it was because you have a very large/wide seating area you needed to cover? Rear speakers are the least important aspect of a 5.1 system (or in your case you bought for a 9.1 system). Obviously, I'd return the two R55Wi's and two of the R5Bi's. You have a nice front stage in the R55Ti's and R56Ci, so all that's needed is two R5Bi's for the rears. That's going to put some hard-earned money back in the bank where it belongs .

I would recommend the opposite: keeping the two R55Wi's, and return two R5Bi's.

Put the R55Wi's for your side surrounds, use the two R5Bi's for your rear surrounds for when* you upgrade the 5.1 to 7.1 :-)

Of course if you go 9.1 then keep everything.

Obviously which "right" solution will be based on your room layout and acoustics.

* Probably "when", not "if"

The E55Wi's came today! So anyone who ordered from last week's Black Friday Sale should be getting them Real Soon Now (TM) :-)

Still waiting for the E5Bi's ... but they should be shipping very soon.

Yeah, I have some SVS bipolar speakers as my surrounds, though they are behind me due to room configuration at the moment. They tend to do a better job of being non-localizable than bookshelves.

This thread makes me appreciate how level headed, nice and normal people are in this owners thread. Hopefully everyone that ordered over the sale enjoy theirs, post up reviews and pictures.

If I was a factor in your purchase and you don't like them... I'm sorry haha.

Part 4/4 ...

Sorry that the colors & sharpness are slightly "blown out." Using the crappy's iPhone 5 camera without a tripod :-( and didn't feel like calibrating them with CameraTrax ... I _did_ adjust the levels (16,240) and (8,230) to maximize the gamut slightly better.

Yeah the side surrounds aren't in the best place ... ideally I'd wall mount them however the right speaker (from sitting) (left from camera) would need a taller speaker stand and I don't think it would look all that great reaching into my drum space. I'll have to see what I do in the future.

I fired up "Hero" (Jet Li - 2002) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0299977/ as a quick "test" and ended up watching most of the movie. :-)

Time to revisit the movies in this Surround Movie List :-)

Soulburner, dsrussell, and Michaelangelo, thank you for your replies. As of right now I am thinking of using the R55Wi as the surround on the sole basis that they are more expensive and therefore better.... lol.
The room layout is not great and to top it off, I have tile throughout the room. I will try taking a pics this evening and post them up to get some feedback on best location for these.

OK. took 2 pics to give a general idea of the layout... excuse the mess.
As I had mentioned, I will have to install the surrounds in the back instead of the sides due to the layout of the room. Would the R55Wi still be the better option or the R5Bi?

One thing though.... looking at the back of the speakers, there are dual mounting holes. The latest pictures on EMP's website show only one mounting hole for a screw (6mm I believe). I purchased the Pinpoint AM24 mounts from Amazon. http://www.pinpointmounts.com/AM-24_...l#.VIJnSDHF8do

The AM24s only have one mounting arm. Is this going to be an issue? I'm a bit disappointed b/c if the hardware has changed, EMP/RBH should reflect this in their product gallery. Brian mentioned that they were no longer recommending the mounts they have on their site to be used with the R5bis. Did they add the second mounting hole for stability or did they always have two mounting screws? Maybe I missed something on their website.

**** A good lesson on exploring first before panicking. The AM24s come with a dual screw mounting bracket. I opened one of the AM24 packages and the mount lines up with the R5Bi. They even provided 2x 6mm screws for the dual screw bracket. Whew! Hopefully this will go off without a hitch.
Did it work out? I'm doing the same thing! The first part of your past made me worried until I got to the end.

First post in the EMP owners thread as I just became an owner of the R55Tis (L/F), R56Ci (C) and R5B surrounds.

I was mostly lurking and posting in the Dedicated HT Construction thread as my basement and dedicated HT were getting built over the past few months. Thanks to the folks on this thread, I got to know about the EMP sale and jumped on it.

BTW, The delivery guy asked if we are preparing to host a concert

Just opened the boxes and it is a sight to take in and enjoy. I ordered all of them in black ash except R56Ci which they ran out and got Red Burl. In hind sight, I should have gone with Red Burl for all of them. Will take pictures soon and post them. Looks like folks who got these in the BF deals are receiving their orders. Keep the reviews coming...and a newbie like me will be happy

I got my front and center hooked up this afternoon (R5Bi's and RBCi red burl) and couldn't be happier. They were boxed great and had no damage that I could find. As soon as I pulled them out of all the packing I started drooling, these are some sexy speakers! I'm fairly new to all of this stuff but I love the sound of these speakers. I'm very pleased with this purchase. I also added a pair of Dayton Sub 1200's that seem to work really well together. Thanks for all the great advice!!

Buying great hardware so we can get back to what we enjoy -- watching movies and listening to music! =P

There are 2 schools of thought ...

For 5.1 "traditionally" the recommendation was bi/dipoles, but some prefer the R5Bi's (monopole) over the R55Wi's (bi/dipole).

Surrounds used to be more "disperse" sounding, but with 7.1, and 9.1 the sound stage has been "tightening" up, so the R5Bi's may work better.

10 years ago when I had my 5.1 setup in a room similar to yours I used bipoles (equivalent to the R55Wi) and never noticed any problems. I would still do the same.

Thanks for the link! Definitely have now a better understanding between the three. I think I will just have to compare both when they get here to see which works best for me; although I do believe the R55Wi will be more to my liking.
I'll post pics once everything is here and set up. Thanks again for the info.
